Seven safer sun rules every mum should know

It’s great to see the kids playing outside in the summer, but it’s vital to make sure they are well protected. Slapping on high factor sun cream is essential, but there’s lots more you should be aware of too.

Here is NIVEA SUN®’s guide to the top sun protection dos and don’ts:

1 DO…Keep young babies out of direct sunlight

Even when they are in the shade, babies are still exposed to reflected sunlight, so use a Baby Sun Lotion Factor 50+ from the NIVEA SUN range and don’t forget a sunhat.

2 DON’T …Think of hats and cover-ups as optional extras

Always pop a hat on and cover limbs with loose cotton clothing. Sun protection should be the last line of defence to help boost other protection.

3 DO…Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm

Sun can still filter through even if you’re in the shade so always put sun protection on and encourage kids to rest and drink plenty of water over lunchtime.

4 DO…Choose high factor sun protection

At least SPF 30 or 40 for children, and make sure it’s specifically formulated for kids. Also look out for creams that block UVA and UVB rays. SPT 30, 40 and 50+ are all available from the NIVEA SUN Baby and Children’s range.

5 DON’T…Let your child go without a drink

Get kids to sip water or juice throughout the day. Keep a drink in a plastic cup or bottle close by at all times. Watch out for warning signs of dehydration such as listlessness and dry eyes.

6 DO…Reapply sun protection often

Reapply every 30 minutes and especially after going into the water and towelling dry.

7 DON’T… wait until you’re out to apply sun protection

Make sure you rub or spray it on before you go out, and apply it generously.
