routine/day time napping

Posted: 04/08/2011 at 08:27
Our DS tends to dose on and off through the day in his bouncer chair downstairs with us when we're home. Except after 7am bottle when I put him back into moses basket to sleep and I go downstairs with DD for breakfast.

He has a sort of nap routine - tends to sleep through most of morning, only awake for bottles, dressing/nappy changes and brief chats! He has about another 3-4 hours over the remainder of the day until we go to bed at 10pm in roughly 1 hour chunks 30 mins after bottles.

We're just about to start putting him up to bed at 8 in evenings so he'll be on his own upstairs until we go to bed, we have a monitor for him tho.

I used to put DD in cot for her nap from around 4 months I think. I'll probably start doing this for DS when we put him in his own room in next few weeks as he's outgrowing moses. I might start putting him down once in morning and once in afternoon.

I think it's fine to put them upstairs by themselves if you have a monitor.

too big for crib!/ jags!

We are in a similar position. Our boy is 8 weeks now and almost too big for Moses basket. Will be looking to move him into his room and into cotbed in next couple of weeks once I've got a big bed for DD in the other bedroom and have moved her out of what will be DS's room/cotbed and into other bedroom.

I'm already nervous about moving him out of our room but we don't have another solution. The cotbed is too big to fit into our room and we dont want to buy a cot. DD was in our room until 11 months as we were living in a one bed flat then but now have plenty of room.

It's nice to hear there are other babies in their own rooms before 6 months & that we're not the only ones.

How was the jab? DD has his on Monday. Xxx

Owen is deaf :(

I'm sorry to hear your news but just wanted to say that early identification and diagnosis makes a huge difference to possible language development. I'm a teacher of the deaf and work with deaf children & their families, I have seen first hand how well profoundly deaf children can communicate, both hearing aid wearers & those who've had cochlear implants. The technology to help deaf people is amazing!

You'll be contacted by a teacher of the deaf from your area soon to offer advice and support but feel free to contact me if you wish to ask anything.

Colic?

Posted: 15/06/2011 at 09:53
I think Infacol is fab. We used it with DD & have been using it every feed the last few days with DS now he's having more feeds from bottle. They bring up a very satisfying burp straight after bottle. Although DS still hangs on to some wind on the odd occasion I've forgotten to give it to him he doesn't bring up half as much wind.

The other thing you could try (if you haven't already) is a dummy. Not everyone likes them but I find they help when baby feels windy.

I started having very mild contractions at around 6pm last Thursday afternoon. I'd had lots of pains on and of so didn't really think much of it. I cooked the tea and continued sorting out the massive load of washing I'd done that day. We put DD to bed at 7.30 as usual and the mild pains continued along but remained the same and were irregular. I decided to text my mum just to warn her in case things kicked off so she was prepared to come over for DD.

We watched BGT and the pains started to get stronger. We decided to put my tens on around 9.30pm (after checking that the pads could be reused in case this came to nothing!). The pains were now a little stronger but still irregular.

We went to bed at 11pm and as soon as I lay down the pains got stronger. I got out of bed and kneeled on the floor as it was more comfy and we started to time them again. They were now 4ish mins apart so I phoned mum to come over. When I was getting my things together I thought I felt a little trickle of fluid so I phoned the mlu. They said that as my pains were only lasting for 30 secs at a time I was probably only in early labour but as I was querying if my waters were going I should go in so they could assess me but would probably send me home.

I was happy with this as I had a feeling by the time I got there they wouldn't be sending me home! The car ride was difficult as the contractions were coming every 2-4 mins and sitting down was so uncomfortable.

We got to the hospital around 12.45am, I was examined at 1am and was 3cm. As they could see the contractions although still short were coming thick and fast they said we should stay. They made us some tea and toast and suggested that we hang about in the relaxation room as it was more peaceful than the delivery rooms. We were enjoying our toast and having a giggle when my waters went pop! I had to walk back down a long corridor back to our room which was difficult. When we got there I was in loads more pain and they had the gas and air ready for me. Within three contractions on the gas and air I felt the head come down and told DH to go and get midwife while I climbed up onto the bed.

At this point there was no stopping him and he pushed his way out while I was up on my knees and I only had to try to slow it down but was so much easier than pushing. Within two contractions he was born at 1.48am just 48mins since I was 3cm!

I was chuffed to hear that I didn't need any stitches (especially internal ones after having them with DD). We had lots of cuddles with our son and another round of tea and toast (my first cup was actually still warm!) and stayed in the room all together with DH on floor on huge beanbag for the rest of the night. We left hospital at 10.30am and went home to introduce him to DD.

I couldn't be happier with everything we experienced and how DS arrived into the world and I remember every second of it! We were so well looked after and felt in very safe hands. It's a bit if a shame I didn't make into the birth pool though as it was only half filled when he arrived! Oh well maybe next time....... X

Combination feeding, and trying to stay strong about it!!

Posted: 08/06/2011 at 15:38
Hi there, we are doing exactly the same and it's working for us too. I am breast-feeding, bottle feeding expressed milk and formula feeding. We are saving the formula for the bedtime and night feed.

it's taken the stress away from feeding knowing that I can and will happily give him some formula top up if he's still hungry after bmilk or just having a hungry afternoon like he did yesterday.

X

It's just not working

You've done such a sterling job and now can relax and enjoy for little boy even more! Don't feel guilty and enjoy the relief that you've made your decision and don't forget you've already given him a really good start!!! Be proud!

Im having difficulty bf my LO as he's always ravenous and although latches brilliantly it's still very painful so I can't put him on very often without my nipples getting bad again so am expressing lots. I know I can't sustain the expressing with DD to look after too when DH is back at work so I've already made my decision that if I can give him bmilk for three weeks I'll be very satisfied with that. With DD I persevered with painful nipples, nerve pain shooting though my breasts all day, expressing round the clock, etc for almost three months and I was an unhappy mummy. This time I want to really enjoy my baby in his first few weeks and not be a stressed miserable mummy to DD.

I think you've done brilliantly! All the best x x x

Do nipple shields make feeds much longer?

Posted: 07/06/2011 at 15:36
Hi all,

My LO is only four days old. He latched perfectly from the start but my nipples still got very cracked and sore so I took a day off feeding and expressed. This evening I put him back on using nipple shields which seemed to work very well (had tried them with my DD and she couldnt latch on). As my milk is now fully in I knew he would feed for longer but he was feeding for an hour and a quarter and was still obviously starving afterwards. I couldn't sit feeding him any longer (had to bath and bed DD) so offered I him a small bottle of formula of which he took 2oz! Seeing as he's been taking 3oz bottles of expressed milk he must have only got 1oz from me whilst bf for over an hour!

Can that be right? Do nipple shields make feeds take that much longer? I was so chuffed to have got him on painlessly but I cant be sitting there for hours on end each feed!
