Easy first finger foods.

Posted: 19/04/2011 at 04:59
Hi there

I've just started BLW and was after some ideas for easy first foods to try. I read a book that recommended green beans to start with so tried that yesterday but I found it a bit too worrying, watching that been being sucked in and out and seeing it waggle round in there! I need some to find some easy to manage, easy to chew/swallow foods that will let Liv get the hang of it, without giving me a heart attack!

Thanks for your help.XXX

When to drop the dream feed?

Posted: 12/04/2011 at 04:51
Hi there

What I did was decide to feed Liv if she woke up, rather than making the point of feeding her at a particular time. For a while she woke up between 10 and 11 but over time dropped it herself. The reason I decided to stop doing the dreamfeed was because it made bog all difference to her sleep - she would still wake at 1am anyway, so I didn't see the point of staying awake until I had done the dreamfeed. Maybe if I was in your position (with the brilliant sleeping) I would have carried on with it.

No idea if that helps, sorry!

Why is she refusing the boob?????

Lovely to hear from you gems! Time really does fly doesn't it. No teeth on Liv as yet, and she fell asleep ok last night, although did then do the funny waking up thing at about 8. I'm wondering whether it is because she is too big for her crib now, so going to try the cot tonight.

Lovely to hear from you xx

Thanks!

I gave her calpol yesterday as she just didn't seem herself and it did help. Then last night she took ages to fall asleep - not like her at all. She did feed during the night but it was grazing and she was having trouble latching on, so it could be teething.

Its very reassuring to know that other babies have gone through the same thing and gone back to drinking again!

Thanks again xx

Hello ladies

Liv is 5 and a half months now and for the last 2 days she has been refusing the boob (although not at night). She's barely had anything. She does this thing where she sucks until the letdown happens then she pulls off.

The only thing that is new is that I started weaning her a couple of weeks ago. Could that be it?

It's really rather stressful, especially as it's so warm at the moment - I'm worried that she's going to get dehydrated.

What could it be???

At what age can you do BLW?

Thanks for your replies!

Sarah-jb: I'm not sure whether this classes as sitting unaided but L sits up straight on my lap, although I need to steady her by holding onto her hands.

Wif: I know what you mean about following your instincts. L reaches for what I am eating and tries to grab my cup of tea right out of my hand! I was a bit naughty yesterday and let her have a suck on a bit of cucumber out of my salad and fair play she looked well pleased with herself.

Mrsmermaid you are already doing baby led weaning! It is just what the name suggests. Rather than doing purees the blw people go straight for finger foods (steamed at first).I think I'm going to do a bit of both, like you are. I'm like you - I have decided I'm not going to be dictated to by some random book that I happened to borrow, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't an actual physical reason why they say to wait until after 6 months.

Thanks ladies, you are so helpful xxx

Your feelings about the birth, esp ones that weren't to plan.

hello ladies, long time no "see"!!

I had planned a homebirth, but ended up in hospital with an epidural and forceps delivery - totally NOT what I had wanted to happen.

However we made the best decisions we could based on what was unfolding before us. Although I was terrified of having the epi I knew it was the best choice for the baby as I was 8 cm at the point and pethadine would have passed into her blood stream.

I didn't have skin to skin at first cos they wanted to wrap Liv up as it was so cold in the theatre, and anyhow I was shaking so much from the drugs that I was afraid I would drop her! But once back in the delivery room I had about three hours of skin to skin.

I think what made all the difference for me was having an independent midwife who was with us all the way through - she even came into theatre with me instead of hubby as he knew it was too much for him. She acted as an advocate for us and Im sure that the other midwives were more respectful of me because she was there watching them!

Although the experience was actually very positive (in a weird way)I know that I lucked out in that the epidural guy was so lovely and the forceps guy was very skilled. Plus all the midwives I had were super (apart from the stupid breast feeding support woman, what a cow). I'm very concious that I may not be so lucky second time round.

And although I do see it as a positive experience, I have NOT forgotten how hideous it was and now when I see a pregnant lady I feel physically sick! So for that and a number of other reasons I doubt very much that I will have another. At least not for another four years!!!!!!!!

Is it 6 months? Can you start before 6 months? If not, why not exactly? I ask cos L is showing all the signs that my blw book talks about, but is only 5 months, and my book says a big fat NO to blw before 6 months, but it's rather preachy so I was wondering whether this is just their opinion, or medical fact.

Ta ladies. Hope you are all enjoying the longer days.xx

Pram rant!!!

I'm pretty sure that when Maenad's Mamas and Papas pram broke they loaned her another while they fixed it.....

I have the Switch. They are bloody heavy aren't they? If I could have my time again I would do more research - sadly I fell in love with the spotty fabric. Doh.

I've done something very naughty - but it worked...
