Confused

Posted: 31/08/2010 at 05:41
hi
Although early babies have some catching up to do, they do eventually reach milestones in their own time. My two sons had caught up with their peers by the age of two. My older daughter is nearly 3 but has some development delay. However she had a bleed when she was born and we were told she may have autism as a result. So this may be the reason. My baby daughter will be one on 7th October and she still isnt sitting up and cant weight bear very well when pulled up from sitting to standing. However she is very verbal and I think she'll learn to talk early.

Can anyone give me some PCOS advice?

Hi,
I have just read your post and thought I would mention my sister's experience. She had 2 periods in 2 years and had other symptoms that related to PCOS. She split up with her partner and dad to her little girl who was then 3 yrs old.
She had put on a lot of weight and decided to go to the doctors as she wanted a definate diagnosis. As she new that PCOS can cause weight gain especially around the waist.
She had the blood test on the Monday and had been told to go back the following week for the results. However , on the Thursday she received a call from the doctor's surgery. The woman's words were 'Congratulations, you ARE pregnant!'
She was in total shock and dropped the phone.
She hadnt had a period for at least 6 months and had only been seeing her new partner for a month.
It turned out that the last night she spent with her ex in their flat, they did the business for old time sake lol. She was nearly 4 months pregnant when she found out.
So I would definately say you've still got a good chance.

Thanks Hayley,
The fist time I saw someone from SENCO, they said that they hadnt heard his name mentioned before, therefore his behaviour at school must be ok ie it must be due to home life. I felt as though they werent listening to me.
Then his teacher came out to see me one afternoon and told me he had punched a boy in the face and made his nose bleed. She told me that she had to consider sending home at lunch times, but agreed that he isnt an aggressive boy.
So the next day I phoned the school and told them I was taking him out for the morning so that I could talk to him. I bought a book and together we talked about his feelings, his likes and dislikes and wrote them down. Then I went to school and asked to speak to the woman from SENCO. His teacher said that he was a bright boy but had problems with concentration and organization. He is now having some support at school.
I feel if they could give him a proper assessment and a proper diagnosis i can feel confident his needs will be met at high school.
Sorry for the waffle.
I agree about having to keep explaining about your sons behaviour. My daughter was due to see the pead in June but is still waiting for an appointment. She has some developmental delay and possible autism ( doesnt rain but it pours lol). She was born at 28 weeks and had a small bleed so we were warned she might have autism.
I really hope your son gets all the support that he needs and you deserve a big hug too.

Hi,
my son is 10 years old and due to go to big school next year and I'm really worried.
He was born at 34 weeks and weighed 4lb 3 oz. He was only in an incubater for 24 hours and did quite well but had 'failure to thrive'. He didnt seem to put on much weight despite having a good appetite. He was always getting infections and his immune system would go into overdrive.
Over the past few years his behaviour has been difficult to cope with. when he was about five he would go into the kitchen and would pick up food or fluid eg juice. He would then empty it over the floor in the lounge. The next morning I would get angry and he would say, it wasnt him. Another time he tipped his brothers pushchair over with him in it. It isnt premeditated, it's impulsive behaviour. He isnt an aggressive lad and can be very polite, but I'm worried for him as it upsets him. A few weeks ago he went on holiday with his dad and step mum. THey said that he pushed his 10 month old sister in the stomach for no reason. He constantly craves attention and despite having three others, I try to find time alone with him. Over the years he's been seen by several professionals and is currently having some support at school.
I'm sure he has ADHD but no one seems to want to assess him properly for this. Each time I speak to someone about it, theyre surprised he hasnt been assessed but dont do anything about it.
Just before his second birthday he was seen by a peadiatrician who said his development was delayed and couldnt understand why he wasnt potty trained She wanted to get him into a special nursery to help him. I saw the same pead again when he was about six and she blamed me for his problems, saying it was because I was depressed!
I dont know what to do or who to speak to.
I want to do the best for my son.
HELP :\?

Impossible...surely???

You can usually tell as they tend to gnaw things that go in their mouths as opposed to sucking everything.

Hi
thanks for your replies.
well, she is chubbing up nicely now and is a whopping 8lb 2oz! lol
I've found that she gets cold quite quickly and her arms and hands turn blue. The peadiatric registrar that we saw on tuesday told us it was to do with her circulation but not to worry. Only if her lips and/or tongue go blue that we need to seek medical attention. think i'm getting really paranoid and will be glad when summers here.
I think her stridor has improved and she only starts to get wheezy and breathless half way through her feed. Doesnt like taking her meds though.
Denise - she's 5 months on the 7th so fingers crossed her PDA has definiately closed. Hope Kenny is doing ok.
Smoochie - i know the feeling. people look at Isobelle and ask how old. they are surprised when i say nearly 5 months.
Sleepy- thanks for asking about elise. She is a little darling and so funny. Her speech is delayed but she does everything in her own time so not too worried.

hart murmer!!

hi,
The most common reason for a heart murmur is called a PDA.
As babies dont use their lungs in the womb, the blood goes round the heart in a different way . it bypasses the lungs due to a valve. This valve usually closes just after birth when the baby takes it's first breath. However in some babies it stays open or doesnt completely close. A doctor will usually hear a murmur. The good news is that it usually closes on its own
i hope you get the answers you need.
my dd has congentital heart problems including a PDA. I've found the Heartline web site really helpful and the parents on the forums are very supportive. You would be very welcome and they can put your mind at rest.
Good luck hun x

Hi Smoochiegal,
can't believe George is 3 months. Time does go soo fast. he'll be 3 years before you know it lol and you'll be chasing him everywhere.
i'm so frustrated as my brother took some photos of her, but his computer has crashed and they're all on there. It seems like she's been a tiny baby for so long now and has just started to smile.

Hi,
Isobelle is now 19 weeks uncorrected (7 weeks corrected) and is doing quite well. She is still small at 7lb 5oz, but shes following the bottom centile so thats good.
Heartwise, she is a good colour and not getting too tired or breathless. we've been told that her PDA (open valve) has probably closed. They will monitor the ASD and if it doesnt close by the time she's five, they will close it and her pulmonary stenosis ( abnormal thickened valve) could get worse but it will be over years rather than months. So we feel a bit more relaxed about it now.
The only thing that is worrying me at the moment is that she has a stridor which is a noise she makes when she breathes. It's worse when she's upset or feeding. She has severe reflux , but the milk and acid get stuck in her throat and she has trouble breathing.
I had to take her to the ENT unit at Birmingham childrens hospital today and they looked down her throat. The doctor was really nice and she told me that there was some inflamation around her voice box caused by the reflux. So she's changed her medication. I've got to take her back for a barium xray and also for them to have a look further down her throat under general anaesthetic.
My poor little girl, she's such a good baby and so brave.

Weaning ... when?

I have had four premmies and was told that it is better for an early baby to be introduced to solid food at 3 months old.
I went to see the paediatrician on friday who said i could start giving Isobelle a little bit of solid food. she is four months uncorrected. she suffers from severe reflux and I think this is one of the reasons, but i'm still not confident to start her on them yet. she also needs to have a regular weight gain as she has cardiac problems.
I would honestly say to go by your baby and if you feel they are ready then go for it.
