Car seats, does anyone know if....

Posted: 07/02/2011 at 06:58
Most councils will have a road safety officer who will be trained to fit/check car seats and will do so free of charge. TBH I wouldn't trust halfords to put a goldfish in a bowl for me, their fitters are not well trained and when I bought a seat there for DD it was fitted incorrectly and I had to redo it and show him how it was done.

My council run regular car seat safety roadshows where they have a big gazebo in the Asda car park and you can get your car seat fitted, general safety advice and a free pack with activities and toys for bigger kids. They're excellent, if your council doesn't do them then lobby them to start! We got sent stats after we had our seat checked and of all the car seats checked on the day, 92% were fitted incorrectly or unsuitable for the way they were being used!

Ice cube trays for weaning

I've seen the bigger pots with individual lids in Tesco and Asda, which I think are brill as you can just grab one pot and defrost with lid on, or take it out with you.

For mashed foods I just used Ikea ice cube trays and transferred to bags as soon as they were solid. It used to cheer me up to defrost little 'hearts' of chicken for him, as they were all funky shaped.

Plum fromage frais - 4 months+?

Posted: 06/02/2011 at 14:35
They're just fromage frais. Lots of babyfood manufacturers state 4m+ on their foods even though weaning guidelines are 6 months generally and 6m minimum for lots of foods.

It's up to you when you introduce it I think - if you choose to wean before 6 months you may feel happy introducing dairy before that stage. I've always thought it was slightly odd that dairy is considered a 'problem' food when so many babies drink modified cows milk from birth! DS had dairy from the off, we started weaning at 5.5 months.

Any need?

I remember the situation but had genuinely forgotten the poster involved. Many users wouldn't have seen it and now it's being dragged up again for entertainment? No, no need at all, other than malice. Reported. I suggest others do likewise.

Breastfeeding dilemma

Posted: 04/02/2011 at 14:12
I swapped two of DS' feeds for formula at 6 months, and 4 weeks later my periods returned! Might it be worth holding out to 6 months EBF, then maybe introducing one feed at a time from a bottle until your cycle returns?

BTW, 33 is young! My friend has just had her 4th at 41 and looks fantastic on it.

How much milk?

Posted: 01/02/2011 at 12:24
An exclusively breastfed baby will take around 25oz of milk per day, I can find you some pages that back this up if you wanted to use that as a jumping off point.

Ethan was mostly breastfed, but even using his odd bottles as a guide he didn't take nearly as much as the 'guidelines' say. He is only now, at nearly 10 months, capable of drinking 7oz at a sitting, and this is very rare. Trust your instinct, if you think it's too much milk then see if he will settle with less.

Wysoy - URGENT advice needed.

Have you tried adding colief to his bottles of regular formula? They work by breaking down the lactose - wondered if it might help sufficiently to be able to keep him on cows milk formula.

Explosive poo!

Posted: 28/01/2011 at 04:24
DS has this whenever he's aggressively teething. We're going through a phase right now.

Cloth nappies, however, do not leak explosive poo, so I never have to change all his clothes. *smug*.

It's to do with all the extra saliva they swallow changing the acid balance of their stomach and gut. It makes their wee more acidic too!

Annabel Karmel books?

Warps on about how breastfed babies don't get enough iron, and then swiftly goes on to mention how formula has lots of added iron!!! She also claims that EBF for 6 months isn't enough to keep babies healthy. There was some other stuff that made me cross, I read some of one of her tomes that came free with a mag but don't remember it verbatim because I was so busy banging my head on the wall.

New Born and Bottle Feeding

Posted: 27/01/2011 at 17:24
Newborn babies have stomachs the size of walnuts designed to ingest approx 7ml of colostrum per feed. The healthiest and kindest way to bottle feed is to offer very little, very often. They do not need or want much in the way of volume at this stage.
