Swaddling and sleeping bags

I think swaddling is not recommended due to potential overheating. x

Smoking around our new babies :-/

Posted: 03/03/2012 at 03:30
My MIL (and the rest of the in-laws) all smoke, and I just refused point blank to be in the house if it stank of smoke, both while pg and then with DD (I also wash *everything* they give us as presents as it always stinks of smoke). It may have been easier to take such a hard stance as I used to smoke quite heavily too, so could say with confidence that if they didnt like it, they could just stop - I did!

They still insist on smoking in a closed room, with all the windows shut, with my niece and nephew in the room though, but my SIL is a total moron so doesnt surprise me in the slightest. MIL has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and we had to spell out to them why her stopping smoking, and them NOT smoking round her was vitally important in her not dying!!

They did try the "we only smoke out the back door" thing, but I said the house still stank of smoke, so that wasnt good enough. MIL tried to do that at at our house and was most put out to be kicked up the bum by DH out into the garden and the door firmly shut on her!! I also make anyone who smokes wash their hands before they touch the baby...mind you, I've also had to remind MIL and in-laws that it might be a nice idea to wash their hands after changing nappies - they're not the cleanest bunch!!

Swaddling and sleeping bags

We swaddled for first few months with DD (born exact same time of year), and while it worked really well at settling her, it quickly became more of a hindrance than a help as she fought out of it regularly, but then cried when out of it! We went cold turkey eventually and swapped to sleeping bags at about 4m, which we used right up until she went onto a duvet and bed a few months ago.

We had initially used a sleeping bag when she was newborn, and she was fine with it - god knows why we swapped to swaddling! This time I'm avoiding swaddling like the plague and have a few newborn size sleeping bags, plus extra blankets if needed. x

So so sad about my labour news

I'm in for a planned section as well, due to gestational diabetes discovery at 28wks, and baby measuring 3-4wks ahead all the way through. Apparently bloody sugar spikes after 38wks naturally as placenta starts to fail, so they like to induce then, but having had a previous section, I didn't want to risk scar rupture, and consultant isn't keen on it either, so we're in for section on 13th March at 38+3.

I have to say, I'm actually relieved as was worried about scar rupture and possible very large baby getting stuck and having to have real emcs, compared to my quite calm failure to progress emcs last time. Weird as it is knowing exactly when baby is coming, my fears for a vbac now outweigh that...and really I'm just very excited to be seeing baby so soon!!

Also, tbh, I have no massive desire to give birth naturally, I tried that, it hurt!!

Breast or Bottle??

...and in case I offend anyone, by BF Mafia, I mean those overly pushy, self-righteous, bf mothers who viciously berate anyone who doesn't bf (NOT those impartial bf-ers who posted above with very good advice!) xx

Breast or Bottle??

I think the above advice from both sides of the coin is great. I also tried, and failed, to bf with DD, due to various reasons (supply/latch/inverted nipples/re-admission to hospital due to drop in weight) and have to say I loved ff as I could share the load with DH. This time I think I'll probably ff again, and have prepared for it with bottles/formula in already, but will have a bash at bf at the beginning, as you never know, it might be a breeze this time! If nothing else, I want to give Poppet colostrum for the first 24-48hrs, by spoon feed if necessary which is what we did for DD.

Its very much an 'each to their own' thing I think...and dont let anyone (i.e. the Breastfeeding Mafia!) tell you otherwise - there is no such thing as right or wrong, only that you feed your baby when they need it, no matter how you choose to do it. xx

confessions!

I do pretty much everything you're not supposed to, although I am a good girl and take my vitamins every morning, even if they are cheapie Boots A-Z plus a folic acid tablet, none of this stupidly expensive Pregnacare for me!!

I eat runny and blue cheese, rare steak, runny eggs (who actually likes hard yolks?!!?), a glass or two of alcohol every few weeks when the desire takes me, sleep on my back (only position which doesn't aggrevate spd), carry half a ton of DD about, McDonalds till it comes out my ears, addicted to Dime bars...and the list goes on! x

I'm reading this, totally confused, thinking how on earth is NikkiRich having a purple bump...and then my brain kicked in - duh!!!

Anyone know their last day of work yet?

Posted: 15/11/2011 at 09:29
My last day will be Fri 2 Mar, taking 3wks hols and then mat leave starting on or around my edd, 26 Mar. I'm lucky that this is exactly the same time as DD due 2 yrs ago so I just changed my dates slightly and everything else stayed the same! HR have sorted it all already, just need to forward MAT1B form when I get it at 25wk appointment x

GIRLS NAMES

I may be biased though Angel, I *really* wanted to name DD India but DH said we weren't cool enough, and sadly I had to agree with him ha ha! x
