I've had my baby :)

Sounds like things are going well for you. How is Paul getting on with George? Isaac is getting ready for starting school so I am a bit stressy about how he will cope, I'm sure he will be fine but I am a little bit protective of him because of all his difficulties xx

Just saying hello and a quick update from us.

Hi, I dont come on here much now but popped on, Wow 10 weeks to go, how exciting, things sound promising for you finally getting a diagnosis for Paul in the future, it is so frustrating not knowing.

Not sure if you read my last post, Isaac has now been diagnosed with Autistic spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, hypermobility and a whole list of other stuff, its been a tough journey and I've realised that the diagnosis is just the beginning, life can be challenging at times but he is my perfect little boy and I wouldnt change him for the world. He has had his hernia surgery and his eye surgery which all seems to have gone well (Post op check next week). He has been referred back to Physio because of his hypermobility and back to orthotics as his inserts are not actually supporting him so his ankles still roll and he still walks on tiptoe, aside from that we are good, he starts school in September so I have loads of meetings at the moment to sort things out and get things in place for him for when he starts, I have a big meeting next week with SENCO, OT, speciallist teaching team and educational phsycologist, not even starting school is simple, still it keeps me busy xx

autism

My little boy who is 4 has just been diagnosed with autism, sensory processing disorder and a whole load of other co-morbids that go hand in hand with ASD, it would be refreshing to read an article about autism that focusses on the impact on the whole family as well as the child who has it.

We have a diagnosis

Posted: 22/04/2011 at 12:01
Hey ladies, how are you doing, I've not been on for a while, usually I just pop in to see if you have been on.

We finally have a diagnosis for Isaac, he has Autistic spectrum disorder, hypermobility, cognitive rigidity, sensory processing disorder, gross motor planning and perception problems and semantic and pragmatic language difficulties.

What a list, I must admit when the report arrived I felt strange, on the one hand I was relieved that finally we have a diagnosis but on the other hand I felt as though my heart had been ripped out, it is not easy to read a report that basically lists every single difficulty your child has in such detail, however, I have picked myself up and realised, this is a positive thing, it means it has opened up pathways to support for all of us and at the end of the day he is my gorgeous little man who Iwouldnt change for the world.

aspergers and obsessions, fuel or distract?

Posted: 22/04/2011 at 11:56
Definitely pick your battles, also use his obsessions to your advantage, so for eg if you want him to do something and he is refusing then say first......... then........ with first being your choice, then being what he wants to do, it doesnt always work and takes time for them to get the message, especially if he is anything like my Isaac.

aspergers syndrome advice please?

My son, also called Isaac has been under the paed for 2 1/2 years, we have been told it is highly likely he has either high functioning autism or aspergers, he is 4 this month and we are still waiting to see, his speech is ok but his communication and understanding of language are behind, he also has hypermobile joints and sensory processing disorder, it is a long road which is full of ups and downs and the best thing you can do is to surround yourself with people who support and understand what you are going through, feel free to pm me anytime if you want a chat xx

Help?

Hi Lizzie. My son is also nearly 4 he starts school in September too, he has been under review of the paediatrician sicnce he was 18 months old and is being assessed for autistic spectrum disorder, all area are different but around here they dont like to diagnose before they are 7 although it maybe that your area is different. diagnosis however does take a long time as your son will be seen by several different proffesionals, from my experience they will say one thing one minute then contradict it the next, for us it has been a real emotional roller coaster and we still dont have a diagnosis, I am dreading him starting school as the school he will attend is a double intake so there will be between 55 and 60 children in his year, he struggles with being 1 of 12 at nursery.

Like you I also have 4 children and I do find it hard that so much of my time is spent up with him, it really is difficult at times, but having said that, he does and says things that make me smile and because he is developmentally delayed it is amazing when he does achieve something and somehow it always feels that bit more special, he is also the most beautiful boy (I know I'm biased) and I really wouldnt change him for the world, I would just like to be able to understand him a bit better.

Not sure about help with moving but have you considered applying for DLA for him, the form is a nightmare (about 42 pages long) and you really need someone who knows what they are doing to help you fill it in, but it is a real help.

Also have you been on any support sites I go on a fantastic one, it is full of parents who are going through or who have been through exactly what you are now, it is also full of helpful advice, I honestly dont know how I would have made it through the last 18 months with out it, Here is the link http://www.asdfriendly.org/board/ anyway, can't think of anything else to write at the moment but feel free to sent me a pm if you want to ask anything else. ((((hugs))))

We have a diagnosis

His nuero appointment was ok, they have said they cant see any immediate reason and the nuerologist told me that he thinks all Isaacs problems are down to autistic spectrum disorder (seem the only person who disagrees is his paed), I had a bit of a hissy fit at the paed on Monday and as a result Isaac has now been referered to and early intervention locality team, specialist health visitor and a paed who specialises in autistim and autistic spectrum disorders, however they are chronically understaffed so we may have to wait up to 3 months for an appointment. Hopefully we will start getting some answers soon.

We have a diagnosis

Hi Ladies, not been on for a while, Charlotte really glad Lydia is doing well and that at last you have some answers, Chriss sorry Paul has been under the weather again hope he is feeling better soon.

Update on us, Isaac had a review with the paed 3 weeks ago followed by a genetics appointment, the paed has basically said that he doesnt deny that Isaac has behavioural, social and communication problems, sensory processing disorder, hypermobility poor core stability and low muscle tone but as he cant come up with a diagnosis he is signing us off as there is no point keep going back every few months and going over the same ground  he said that when Isaac starts school in September he will automatically get picked up by the SENCO and referred to the school paed. To say I am fuming is an understatement, I am not prepared to accept that there is no one to help us, I have asked for referal to a different paed at a different hospital but so far I am hitting a brick wall.

We saw the geneticist who actualy gave a diagnosis in writing of autistic spectrum disorder, in a way I breathed a sigh of relief that finally we knew what we were dealing with, however the paed will not support the diagnosis so it is not an official diagnosis.

He was also due to go in for surgery last Thursday to repair his hernia/hydrocele but at his pre op on Tuesday they discovered he has a heart murmur so cancelled the op until he had seen a cardiologist. We saw the cardio on Friday and he has a condition called bicuspid aortic valve, what that means in laymans terms is this, the aortic valve usually divides into 3 sections, this enables the valve to close properly and prevent blood from flowing back into the heart, Isaac has only 2 sections so he has a bit of backflow, at the moment they are not concerned and it generally doesnt cause any problems in childhood, problems are usually seen later on in life when the heart has to work harder, he will be reviewed every few years but for now we have been told not to worry (easier said than done). He has been rebooked in for his surgery 22 March, then he will be due another lot of surgery on his eye before the beginning of March, busy time for us at the moment. Good to hear from you both, take care. H xxxx
