20 week scan - Edinburgh

Hi EMcG (and anyone else in Edinburgh!) I've booked private scan at Healthcare now. ??150 for detailed anatomy scan and you can pay a bit extra for dvd of the scan. Babies in the womb was the same price - they did give me a bit of hard sell 'oh, lots of people using christmas gift vouchers so book now or you might miss out' kind of thing which I didn't like so much. Healthcare now seemed a bit more 'medical'. that said, on one of the other posts a while ago there were positive recommendations about babes in the womb. Haven't emailed msp yet, been a bit rubbish. Will do soon!

does this sound right to you?

hi funkymonkey, have just done a quick check on calendar and if the first day of your last af was Monday 10 December, then by Friday 22nd feb you'll be nearly 11 weeks so its not too unusual. I had to wait until 13 weeks for mine and the wait was excrutiating! At least you'll not have to wait quite so long.

Hi EMcG - the impression I've had is that if the health professionals are concerned then you can get a second scan which isn't always much good to us!

Incidentally, someone I know only discovered at the 2nd scan that she was having twins. Eeek!

PNE - thanks for the link!

Why don't working families get anything???

Posted: 04/01/2008 at 16:15
just wanted to add - i dont think the benefits system is perfect and I really feel for people who find themselves out of work for whatever reason while pg then end up with no smp or qualifying for maternity allowance.

laura2008 - there is help for working families on low incomes that's what the tax credits etc are for.

Anyway, also dont want to offend anyone, but feel strongly about this and wanted to share my opinion

great thanks! Am also planning on contacting msp - not particularly to get a free one, more to complain about the whole postcode lottery system!

Why don't working families get anything???

Everyone knows someone who seems to be taking the mickey out of the benefits system, but that doesn't mean that by and large that many people on benefits dont need the help. There are plenty of parents on benefits really struggling to survive and however it might seem, they are not given a kings ransom to live on.

A few years ago, a friend of mine as a lone parent had to give her child to her parents to look after for a few months because she simply couldn't manage. She was living on benefits because she genuinely couldn't work and to see her give up her child was heartbreaking.

Most people can argue that they could do with a bit extra - but really where is supposed to come from? Are all us working families ready to pay more tax? Or should they cut the health and education funding?

Most people that are on benefits are struggling to get buy and would probably love to be able to work to pay for nice things for their kids. Yes some people abuse the system, and we all seem to know some, but that doesn't mean they're in the majority. The scumbags that do abuse the system just make the most noise.

Sorry for having a rant, not trying to have a go at anyone.

Just for the record - me and OH are both working!

Cant ditch the fags!

Hi Mikayla,

Sorry you're finding it so hard. I gave up smoking when I got pregnant; its not easy but I just tell myself I'm not allowed to full stop. Whenever I really want to have a cigarette I try and do something to distract me (like window shopping for baby things) or imagine what it would do to the baby. I know you say that you cant stop - but you can, you're just finding it hard! Speak to your gp, I know that nicotine replacement stuff isn't recommended for pregnancy but what is worse - the nicotine in a patch or the combination of nicotine, smoke, tar and poisonous chemicals passing through your blood stream to baby.

(Sorry I'm not a preachy ex-smoker just trying to encourage you to stop ).

What bottles to buy?

thanks,

anyone used the tommee tippee electric sterilizer? I dont mind the price of the electric one but if its doing the same job as the microwave one I resent being charged more to plug it in : )
