2nd hand pushchairs - not an advert, just curious

Posted: 12/04/2012 at 05:37
I've bought all of my pushchairs (except for a lightweight stroller) second hand. My rule is to never pay more than half the price of what it would cost new, as you might as well buy it new in that case. I've generally bought off ebay, and gone to collect them so that I can have a look before I hand over the money. There's been two that I bought then changed my mind and sold on at a profit, which is great.

Like others say, it depends on what type of pushchair it as to how much people ask for it. Good quality doubles generally are quite expensive as people don't get a lot of use out of them so they hold their value really well, but are also usually in quite good condition.

Another way to get an ebay bargain is to buy one that has an easily replaceable part missing or broken. I did this with my Britax B-Dual - one of the mudgards and the raincover were missing so I got the pushchair for ??130 (they normally go for about ??200 on ebay) and purchased a new set of mudgards from Britax for ??7.50 and a new raincover for ??15. If you're going to do that though check that the manufacturer does sell the spare parts before you buy. Britax are very good on that front as the spares are reasonably priced and they don't charge postage.

Water while breastfeeding - conflicting advice

Posted: 07/04/2012 at 06:42
I started offering water to my dd as soon as I started weaning her, which was from 5.5 months. I was advised to do so by the hv who did the weaning chat. I offered it to her at meal times. It didn't affect my supply as I fed her until I she was 13.5 months. I will do the same when it is time to wean my ds.

He could be asking for both sides because he's hungrier, not because your supply is dropping. It might be that he's ready for more food. Have you increased the amount you're giving him since starting weaning and is he on 3 meals a day now?

With the poo issue, they're all different, but as long as he's not in any discomfort and his poos aren't too solid or like rabbit droppings when he does go it might just be the way he is. If you'd like him to be a bit more regular, or he is constipated, I found that watered down apple juice would always help my dd go, as would fruit (except banana). She is nearly 2 now and still eats lots of fruit, and still does 1-3 poos a day, but that is very much at the top end of poo production!!

I say if you like it then go for it. If you're still not sure, you could always use it as a middle name instead.

faffing at day feeds, time to drop them?

Posted: 19/03/2012 at 09:47
S started to faff with her day time feeds at about 9 months and had dropped them one by one by about 11 months, along with her early morning feed. I just replaced them with snacks like cheese and yoghurt to make sure she was getting enough calcium. She finally dropped her pre-bedtime feed at about 13.5 months.

I've got the Britax B Dual and it folds up pretty small even with the seats on and fits well in my narrow hallway. You can also take both seats off and fold the chassis separately. We have a Focus C-Max so boot space isn't really an issue for us, but some of the bigger doubles don't fit. Best thing to do is find somewhere that will let you try fitting each one in your boot. I haven't used it as a double yet as my second is due in just over two weeks (eeek!) but have been using it as a single. I wasn't keen on tandems but a side by side just wouldn't have been practical for our hallway.

Where to put the car seat?

The safest place is apparently in the middle if you have proper seatbelts, as it cuts out risk of impact from the side. However, I know no one who has their carseat in the middle!! The most practical if you have just one is the passenger side as you can see them easier when you're driving and if you park by the side of the road you will be unloading baby on the the path rather than the road.

We've moved our toddler over to the driver's side and baby will be on the passenger side. I don't think there's any law though, it would be completely impractical for anyone that has more than one child.

When are you starting maternity leave?

Posted: 09/03/2012 at 10:41
I've finished at about 33 weeks both times but had a year's worth of annual leave to take, so last time my ML started at 38 weeks (which ended up being the day my dd was born!!!) and this time it starts at 39 weeks.

That was about right for me, I ended up with pre-eclampsia first time round so was in hospital and had lots of DAU visits on discharge. This time round I've got suspected growth restriction so I've got lots of scans and hospital visits again so it makes it easier not being at work.
