Stretch marks...

Posted: 06/04/2012 at 05:16
1. Do you have stretch marks?
Yes

2. What week do you start experiencing them?
38 weeks (1st pregnancy), no additional ones so far

3. What spaces of the body are more affected?
Lower tummy and hips (had old stretchmarks on my chest and thighs from puberty but they did not change during pregnancy)

4. What methods do you use to prevent them?
First pregnancy I used BioOil twice a day, also tried Palmers Cocoa Butter, but didn't like it.
This time I have been using a stetchmark oil from Weleda on my tummy and hips and baby oil on the rest of me. Just started on another oil from Neal's Yard that a friend gave me.
I do think that you will either get them or not no matter how much or little you do to prevent them. Applying oils and creams merely helps a little to keep your skin hydrated and more supple, but once your skin is stretched too much or too quickly it will tear.

Second plus timers, what can you tell first timers that they might not have been told?

I must admit I was expecting the blood loss to be worse than it was (still very heavy don't get me wrong!) but my periods have always been heavy and I just made sure to change my maternity pad every time I went to the loo (which was often due to being very thirsty and drinking lots of water). I held the old 1 over my stitches so there was no pain as I went.
Also, the midwife recommended to me that I should go for the first time just after my stitches were put in place so the anaesthetic was still in place.
And on the subject of stitches: They might have to very briefly put a finger in your bottom just to check none of the stitches have gone through.

I remember feeling shocked at how light I felt after giving birth and how odd it was to be able to move properly again after waddling for weeks and not being able to bend over lol

With regards to breastfeeding: It does take most mummies and babies a while to get the hang of it. The first 2 weeks can be rather uncomfortable on your boobs with the engorgement from your milk coming in, sore nipples, etc but it gets so easy after that. One day baby just gets the hang of it and latches on perfectly as soon as anywhere near your boob!

I always had a little box set up with some essentials for when breastfeeding since you are just kinda stuck wherever you are and let's face it hubby might not be that observant or he might not be there at all to supply you with anything. I had water, a cereal bar, nipple cream, breast pads, a muslin and my phone. Made sure that box was within reach before I'd sit down and then I had everything at hand.

Your hormones are gonna be crazy for a while and it's perfectly normal to cry for no reason at all.

During labour most women wee, poo, fart and/or vomit - and no-one cares at the time! The midwives have seen it all before and your birthing partner wouldn't dare comment given the amazing thing you are doing by bringing another life into the world!

Oh yes, I was surprised and confused by this, but my contractions were all in my back and thighs - during the pushing stage I even kept getting cramps in my thighs as there were so over-worked and I'm clearly too unfit

Lastly I would recommend having a babymoon and holding off visitors for a couple of days. Hubby and I had just a few days as our new little family and it was such a lovely time. I could rest in bed or on the sofa all day and didn't have to worry about looking presentable, we ate rubbish-y food and most importantly we got to know this new little person and didn't have to share him with anyone!

baby movements

Well it's generally a very rhythmic "kicking". We videoed it when I was 31 weeks pregnant with my son:

Hope that works. x

Here I go again... I feel FAT rant!

Posted: 27/03/2012 at 10:30
A lot of people don't seem to think before they speak and obviously don't realise how upsetting certain comments can be to someone else, let alone a highly emotional pregnant lady!

The old lady next door to us asked me the other week how long I had left, so I told her 15 weeks and she said "Oh you're quite big, aren't you?" As a matter of fact I don't think I am and at the time I was too shocked to say anything back... The other extreme is my clients at work: In an attempt to be polite they would say things like "I didn't even notice that you were pregnant" - Well it's either that or I've gotten rather fat of of a sudden!?

I don't think it matters what size you are as someone will always find some daft comment to make (to try and make conversation??) and I would definitely not listen to anyone's birth stories where they "nearly died" or whatever (why would you feel the need to dramatise your birth in front of someone who is about to go through it??).

Anyhoo, rant over lol. Being pregnant is something so special and such a precious time. You are doing an amazing job growing and nurturing this new little person inside you.

FOOD!

Posted: 27/03/2012 at 10:18
I was really good in my first pregnancy, but I must admit I'm purposely eating whatever I want whenever I want at the moment as I am seeing this as my last chance to stuff my face  Luckily my metabolism seems to have sped up at lot and my increasingly squished up stomach makes it impossible to eat big amounts so I don't think I have put on a lot of weight.
Will have to be really really good once baby is here though! My goal is to look fab for my 30th next year...

baby movements

I really like this bit because you can feel the movements, other can feel them, and sometimes even see them, but they are not so strong yet that baby is hurting you.

My baby seems to have a few regular active spells during the day now: usually at 7 am and 10pm and then a few more times during the course of them day every couple of hours depending on what I am doing. Little one gets hiccups every once in a while too, which is so cute! My son had them up to 4 times a day in the end and you could tell they got him all frustrated after a while

Has anyone got their nursery decorated yet?

Posted: 27/03/2012 at 10:08
I'm all jealous cos we can't do any wall painting in our rented flat... Stuck with good old Magnolia... Mind you my son and the new baby will have to share so depending on the gender of this baby we could decorate it for both with some wall stickers at least. The theme we had for my son was Mothercare's Sleepy Farm range, so mainly yellow and pastels which should be fine no matter what we have this time.
Cotbed is being delivered next Wednesday and I really want to build it asap, but hubby suggested dismantling it again straight away and my mum reckons I should only check all the pieces and not put it up yet at all... But I wanna!!! I love all the preparation for a baby!

26 weeks tomorrow!!!

Posted: 25/03/2012 at 13:07
I'll be 26 weeks on Wednesday and yesterday my colleagues at work were really shocked when I said I had only 9 weeks left at work. I think a lot of people struggle to know how much the pregnancy in weeks means so if I tell them that I have less than 3 1/2 months to go then they tend to say "that's not that long, is it?" I know! And I'm so excited to meet this little person! I've got my fingers crossed for a slightly early arrival in June.
We ordered baby's cot the other day and it's getting delivered next week. Makes it so much more real when you start decorating their nursery etc, doesn't it?
I've started buying bits for my hospital bag as well and will get that packed in a month's time. Looking forward to all those bits.
Got a 4d scan booked for the end of April when we will finally find out if baby is a boy or a girl so I can then go crazy buying clothes!
