My Group B Strep baby
My Group B Strep baby

Bex tells her birth story:

I was Group B Strep during my pregnancy and was told I would need three doses of antibiotics four hours apart.

I was given the due date of Christmas Day. Emeliya-rose came on Christmas Eve morning. I went into hospital at 7.45am and she was born at 12.06 noon.

At 7am on Christmas Eve I woke up in pain, I decided to go take some paracetamol to see if the pain would ease; I really didn't think I was in labour.

I phoned my partner and parents and they were here within five minutes

8am Christmas Eve: When I got to the labour ward they attached me to an IV straight away so the first lot of antibiotics would get into my system.
They said this would take 20 minutes and in the meantime they didn't want to examine me in case the labour became more active. At first I declined the gas and air and slowly rocked on the birthing ball.
Ten minutes later I asked for the gas and air.

10.45am Christmas Eve: I was 5cm dilated. (I had dilated 3cm in 45minutes.) I was screaming for an epidural. They told me the anaesthetist would be there in half an hour.

11.15am Christmas Eve: I felt like I needed to push. They decided to give me my second lot of antibiotics early and said if I didn't hold the baby in till these got in my system, then the baby would have to go to special care. So I crossed my legs!

11.45am Christmas Eve: The epidural just started to work as I was told I could finally push.

12.06pm Christmas Eve: Emeliya-rose was born weighing 6lb 7oz.
