How does it work?
A TENS machine delivers an electrical stimulus that triggers endorphins – your body’s own painkillers – and helps block pain. It usually takes about 40 minutes to become effective, and is drug-free.
How do I use it?
You use sticky padsto fix several electrode pads on your back to help stimulate your nerve endings. It has three different programs, so you can adjust the settings depending on how much pain relief you need.
Where can I get one?
You can hire one from hospitals or suppliers for around £30 or buy one for around £70.
Anything else I need to know?
It’s a good idea to practise using it before you go into labour so you know how it works. But you shouldn’t use it before 37 weeks. And remember, it’s not suitable for a water birth.
