Women undergoing IVF treatment who drink five or more cups of coffee a day reduce their chances of getting pregnant by half.
A study of almost 4,000 women at a Danish IVF clinic found that those who had an appetite for caffeinated drinks were 50 per cent less likely to get pregnant.
Information on coffee drinking habits was collected at the start of IVF trials and then at the start of each cycle of treatment. Scientists found that women who drink five or more cups of coffee a day reduce their IVF success rate by 50 per cent.
The research found no adverse effect on getting pregnant for women who drank less than five cups a day while undergoing IVF.
Dr Kesmodel who led the study said: ‘It does seem reasonable, based on our results and the evidence we have about coffee consumption during pregnancy, that women should not drink more than five cups of coffee a day when having IVF.’
