Hi all... first of all massive congratulations to all you ladies who've had your gorgeous October babies! I've been following everyones BAs and stories, wow, it's been an exciting month so far! I'm so happy for all of you, some beautiful little babies arriving .

I've been moseying on during this pregnancy having had quite a reasonable time, no issues with me or baby so far other than the fact a small fibroid was picked up at my 20 week scan. (This is relevant later.)
My due date is on Saturday 9th Oct, this being my first baby I had booked in at the midwife led unit due to the fact everything has been uncomplicated so far. Baby was head down and engaged (or so I was told) at around 37 weeks so we were all ready to go. My 40 week appointment yesterday has unfortunately thrown a bit of a spanner in the works as the midwife now thinks baby is either breech/oblique, and due to the fact the fibroid has apparently grown (which they do in pregnancy, however I did not get told this and it has never been monitored) she can't really work out what part of baby is what and what position he is in, but she's pretty sure he's not head down/engaged. She also thinks there's a chance the fibroid may have moved down and be in the way of my cervix. Yipee.

I've had issues with my mw all the way through, various things have been missed/and or late, and just had the feeling she's not all that comptetent. This was a different, more senior mw that I saw yesterday for the first time and thank god for that as it seems like fate I saw someone who seemed to know what they were doing. I'm a staff nurse in ICU so I think I'm pretty good at picking up when people know what they're doing or not, but I guess that's irrelevant now.

So the mw says she wants me to have an urgent scan to check the baby's position (bearing in mind this was yesterday and she was unable to get anything organised...don't worry, hubs is on it this morning and getting very cross as apparently she has now gone off sick this morning!!!! Would you believe it?) And also that I need to see a consultant. The mw hubs has spoken to today is saying this is now an urgent situation as my due date is Saturday.

I am so freaking out now! Waiting for mw to see what she can organise for today/tomorrow. Be honest ladies... I'm going to be having a section here, aren't I?

Hi hun,

I think from reading your post it seems likely and probably the safest method for you to deliver your baby. Try not to worry your husband sounds very supportive, try and relax watch some crapy TV and hopefully you will be scanned soon today and will be given a section date.

Take care and keep us all updated, good luck.

Hi there

I think I agree with Mrs Dug. Even without the fibroid, having a breech baby would mean a c-section I would have thought. How rubbish though that they haven't monitored you more closely so that you would have been prepared should the fibroid become an issue.

I know its hard not to worry, but try not to let it stress you out too much. Perhaps take the opportunity to research c-sections and recovery - Boots and Mothercare do some special things to help with the scar recovery.

Good luck with it, hope it gets sorted soon. xx

just a quickie, sorry to hear of your situation.

I know we shouldnt do it but I would mention that you are a staff nurse in critical care. The will then realise that they are talking to someone with hospital knowledge and althought they shouldnt do it, it might make them act more quickly. Sounds as though your hubby is being supportive and saving you the stress of sorting it out. You could even mention about complaining about the lack of knowledge/investigations as you shouldnt be getting to 40wks only to jsut be told your breech. Especially if the fibroid should have been monitored.

If your baby is breech I think the chances of s/he turning is probably slim now and like the others ahve mentioned, I would read up on c-sections. someone has posted recetly on their experience - sorry, can't remember who of the top of my head...will try and find it and bump it for you.

Hia sweety what a stressful situation to be in!! Sounds like your OH is really on top of it though and should be able to get something sorted.
As for the section - don't worry about it - it really really isn't as bad as it sounds.
Keep us updated - I hope it all turns out OK for you.

Hia - Joey said someone posted on their c-section experience and I was one of them. If you ignore the fact that mine was emergency lol it might help a little bit. I actually had a very positive experience - and would have no issues having a c-section again. If you want to ask any questions or anything just ask away and good luck

Thanks to all of you for your replies... you all sound so calm and rational. Usually I am too!
I was sent to the pregnancy day assessment unit by the midwife who spoke to my husband this morning, she couldn't understand why I wasn't referred yesterday. Anyway we had a scan which showed baby to be head down and everything normal! The sonographer couldn't understand why the mw had such an issue in locating the baby's head, the fibroid wasn't an issue as it hadn't grown/moved! Bizarre.

We were then seen by another mw who confirmed bubs is head down and pretty much fully engaged, along with a consultant who confirmed it a third time and talked to us about the fibroid and the fact it didn't pose any risk to me having a vaginal delivery. By this time I was starting to feel like a bit of a prat! He did say it slightly increases the risk of PPH, so if nothing else I've opted out of the midwife unit for delivery and will go to the hospital instead on his advice, despite the risk being v. small.

I can't believe all the fuss! It's amazing how you can go from thinking that all is fine to being terrified! It wasn't so much the idea of having a section - that I can cope with, whatever is best for the baby + I is obviously the way to go, but more the fact that I was totally freaked by the way it was handled yesterday and then nothing being done! I mean, if you're told you need an emergency scan, you kind of want it yesterday, don't you?

And Joey, you're definitely right, you do get treated slightly differently when people find out you work within the sector, sometimes a good thing and sometimes not I find! Depending on who you see.

Anyway, lets hope that's the last of the drama, and I'll get back to bouncing on my ball and a nice cup of raspberry leaf tea (!).... maybe I'll get to join Snugglenush with a baby who arrives on his due date eh?

Thanks again for the replies ladies. x

laura - im so pleased to be reading this You said you felt a bit silly, but tbh it was the mw that couldnt locate the fact your baby was head down! At my 34wk apt I said to my mw that i thought the baby had gone from lying sideways to ehad down as the babys hiccups were coming from under my bump. Despite this, she said she had a feel and didnt know which way the baby was!

Must have been nice seeing your baby again and given the relief/confirmation that all is well. Good news about the fibroid too. Mws idea of an emergency appt appears to be some what different to when a nurse/dr mentioned an emergency appt! With my first I didnt see midewife until after 12wks and was told she would make an emergency scan date otherwise the dates will be less accurate. After a few days of waiting i had to book and make it myself - hardly an emergency!

Anway back to your post - just thought id mention that fi you are drinking the tea purely because its raspberry leaf, the mw told me its the tablets you need to be taking not the tea!

Only just read this - so sorry you had a stressful time of it waiting to find out what was happening. Really glad that baby is head down tho and that your fibroid hasn't grown.

Fingers crossed it isn't long for you to wait now :\)

Keep bouncing...me and my ball are the best of friends these days

congrats honey, glad things are all in the right direction.... according to my cover midwife that i saw on monday, i had a uti (water infection) strange as i have been fine all the way through, 39 weeks tomorrow and no problems, so she worried me by saying she was sending my sample off to be sure, she didnt seem that competent either, she poked and proded me about 6 times and checked my measurements 5 times to make sure she had got it right!! anyway, phoned docs today and results are all fine - thanks for the stress!!!! x x x
