Right ladies...what do we know about high prolactin levels??
06/08/2008 at 02:01
I had a blood test a few weeks ago that said mine was high (698 - max level is something like 600) GP freaked me out with stories of ovaries shutting down, delaying/stopping ov etc.
She did a routine repeat of the test last week to confirm it was still too high and was going to refer me to endocrinologist but it came back as 472!! Yay!
Apparently stress can make it rise and I HATE blood tests so that could have just been the reason the first reading was high as they took 5 bottles from me that day so if they tested the prolactin from the last bottle I was v stressed by then...!

I did lots of reading about it though and it seems it is easily treatable with medication and unless the levels are in the thousands it's not too serious.

Hope that helps. xxx

I have high prolactin levels - mine are aound 1200 at the mo. Im going for 21 day bloods today to get them checked again. Im also going for an MRI scan because it might be due to a benign tumour on my pituitary gland. Basically it means I havent ovulated and we've been ttc since March 2007. BUT I did OPK for the first time this month and it came up that I had an LH surge on THurs Fri last week - so fingers crossed that menat I OV and Im 5 dpo now. The blood test Im having today will tell them that. Im supposed to be getting Clomid to get me to Ov, so hopefully I will still get that - but thats not till 27th Aug.

Hope this helps

Thx guys

I had high reading at last test 859! but everything else was ok (phew). I am still ovulating, but very late in cycle.

My GP started telling me about the possibility of it being a tumour on the pituitary and yes it freaked me out. Have to wait now for a referral to the endocrinologist and a possible brain scan....so guess ttc gets even harder now!
I do feel a bit better that I have a reason why I prob MC and why I can not get preg.

Hi

I also have this my level was 503 and the cut off point was 450 (the cut off points depend on what test the lab use)

I went to the docs in May as I came off the pill in Nov and since have had very regular 28 - 29 day AF but very light / short lasting only 1 to 2 days with spotting for another 3 days.

I had a blood test and the doc said I have marginally raised prolactin levels and he wants to do another test to see what comes back next time.

I had my second test on monday and am waiting for my results.

I am ovulating (I think!!) as I have had a positive on OPK 2 months in a row and I get the others symptoms EWCM etc.

Depending on what my result is the doc said next step is to monitor and MRI scan if it goes up or stays up.

If you don't mind me asking - why did you have a test for it - what are your symptoms? Where you on the pill?

I am convinced it is the pill getting out of my system but I will have to wait and see.

I too have read that stress can cause high levels together with early morning, following exercise and if you are underweight / anorexic etc.

I think I was stressed and it was 9am so hopefully this explains mine too!!!

I never thought I would be complaining about a short AF!!!

Hope this helps x

Looks like theres a few of us with the same problem. I didnt think mine was particularly high.
Somebody mentioned to me that if you do have a tumour (benign perfectly safe) then the levels would be much much higher - like 5000 and it was a reliable source, which is why I wasnt overly worried about mine being at 1200.

Hi Popsicle

The doctor did tell me that the upper level depends on which lab does the test as they all have different methods / tests.

The upper limit for my test was 450 and my actual level was 503.

Your upper level may have been much higher due to the test used ?

The doc did tell me that if my levels were over 1000 he would be sending me straight for an MRI

So I imagine yours are not really that high its just a different lab / test was used?

Hi All

Loola - thanks for sharing your experiences.
I went to the Dr to get my thyroid levels checked as I have an underactive thyroid and as have being ttc for 12 months since a mmc, I had also been having bad headaches.

It is reassuring to know I am not the only one experiencing this and fingers crossed we all get it sorted ..
