Hi Girls,

This is my first topic on this site and i am completely new here, i'm sure you've seen this thread umpteen times, and if there is one in existence, feel free to point me in the right direction.

I confessed to a friend yesterday that we were thinking of TTC (i presume that means trying to conceive? lol) and she happend to mention that her doctor sister had recommended being off the pill for one year before even trying for a little one.

I've never heard this before, and wondered if anybody had any thoughts on the matter? and obviously while your here...feel free to discuss any myths or facts that you may or may not have quesitons about!

Thanks in advance for any help you girls have to give x

Hi and welcome, I decided to come off the pill in january as we are going to start TTC later this year and wanted to get my cycle back to being regular, the nurse did say it was best to have at least three months of 'real' periods once coming off, I think this is more so they can be more acurate with dates and things. I personally just wanted to get the pill well and truly out of my system and so far so good, I'm back regular as clockwork (i only ever had a period about every 3/4 months ont he pill) I've got a dead on 28 day cycle now so fingers crossed when we start trying soon we won't have any probs!

Hope this helps

I can't say I've ever heard of this personally - have any of you girls??? But I am no Dr so what do I know!!! LOL
I have heard the opposite actually, that you are a lot more fertile after coming off the pill.
I am pretty sure it would be good (for your body) to have a 'normal' period after your withdrawl bleed, but again I'm not a Dr so I don't know for sure.
I would do what feels right for you, its your body and you know it well to know if you're up to it.
Good luck TTC and welcome to this friendly place!!!!!

Hello there and welcome

I am the same as Joo, i came off the pill 4 months ago and was told by my nurse to try right away. It is safe to do this the only reason they say to give yourself three months is so they can give you the right due date.

Best of luck

From what I understand there is absolutely no reason why you can't start trying immediatley after coming off the pill as it will cause no harm to you or your baby. But if I was talking to friends I would also recommend coming off the pill up to a year before you want to start trying and that is simply due to the fact that you don't know how long it will take your body to get back into its natural cycle again. For me, I came off the pill 6 months ago and I've only had 1 period since then. No period = no ovulation = no chance of making a baby! So if I could turn back the clock I would have come off the pill a lot earlier so that my body was actually in a position to ttc when my mind was! That said, don't panic, because everybody is different and the majority of girls on here have had a few hiccups coming off the pill but nothing too major and have got back into a fairly regular cycle quite quickly. The problem is you just don't know until you do it, so if you can, there's no harm to come off the pill a bit earlier than you are planning to ttc and that way you know you'll be in the best position to do so when you're ready.

Hope that long ramble made sense!

hello
i am also new to this site, i saw my nurse a while ago about TTC, she told me that you are most fertile the first month you come off the pill and that they only ask you to wait to get an accurate due date.

I've never heard of this either!! My nurse said to wait a month only (well to first real AF) to make it easier for them to date if get PG - but you are more fertile the 1st few months off the pill. It is personal choice xx

p.s. I started trying straight away lol xx

i've never heard of it either, and i'm with the others - i've heard that you can be more fertile after pill and that in some cases people have been put on the pill a month then come off it to "kick start" things. i came off the pill 2 and a half years ago but that was because i think it stopped agreeing with me. also pre-pill my cycles had been messed up so figured i should give it time to get back to normal, but that was just me! part of me wishes i could have started ttc straight away but we wanted to wait until after our wedding last year.

good luck and lots of babydust xxx

ps welcome!!!!
