Has anyone been to the doctors?

Hi girls

I'm thinking of going to the doctors to get things checked out. I'm 35 this month and we're on to month 7 so I feel it might be a good idea to get things looked at sooner rather than later.

First question - has anyone been to get checked out and would you mind letting me know what they do to you and hb and the sorts of timescales involved?

Also, some advice if anyone can help. Does anyone know if the doctor is likely to do anything or could they say go away and try for longer? My dilema is because hb is going away for 6 months in December and I'm not sure if they are likely to make us wait until he comes back and maybe wait until we've tried for longer once he's back. I feel as if I want to get things started now, so that when hb gets home at least we know where we stand, but I'm not sure if going to the doctors now could in fact delay any investigation rather than speed it up.

Thanks in advance!

hi daisy girl
im 26 and when we were ttc we tried for about 11 months before we got checked out. basically had blood tests see hormone levels etc then an initial appointment with consultant who said i would have to have internal camera beginning next period. my periods were horrendously irregular so knew that had something to do with it. they became reg after 12 months and before i could go for camera thing i was pregnant. took 15 months in all to get there my son is now 6 months old. its a long process for some people but as you 35 they say only wait 6 months i think after 30 before checked out. also its not just you who has to be checked my husband was due a sperm sample test the day after i got bfp. hope this helps xxx

Hi DG
I am 33 and saw my doc before we started trying. She said to come back in 6 months if we weren't pg as there were some simple tests they could run to check yr ovulating and that OH's swimmers are present & correct!

If you don't have a sympathetic GP, request to see another.

Have you been ov'ing, do you know?

Anyhow, it takes an average (?!) couple 6 months to fall and we all know people who fall at the drop of a hat, so try not to fret! It sounds like you're calm and logical, which always makes doctors take you more seriously - I reckon)

Good luck xx

Thanks so much for the replies girls, it helps to just have an idea of what might happen.

Hayley - I bet you and hb were so pleased you became pg before the camera / sperm tests! My hb is being wonderful and is fine about going for tests, but I'm sure he'd rather not.

Good to know I wouldn't be going too early. I wonder if I'd have the same tests after the ov tests - I've never had problems with my periods and am very regular even straight after coming off the pill. I guess there are lots of different tests and it depends on your history?

Weeza - I've been using ov sticks for the last two months and all seems to be well, so could just be that we're one of the couples that takes a little longer. Would love to know that's the case so we can just relax and wait and hope for that BFP.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who might have the same experience. Also, can anyone tell me which day they do the ov blood tests. I think it was woomummy said day 18 for her and I wonder if that's always the case? Our situation is slightly complicated because hb and I live apart for some of the week because of his job, so I need to be where he is when I ov not where the doctor is!

Oooh, and one more question! Does anyone know how long it takes for the boy's tests to be done because hb is going away in December so might have to get a move on!

x

Hi chocoholicworm and #annette#

Thanks so much for the info - all sounds really good - I should be able to get the tests done and be with hb at the crucial time! :\) I called the drs today and looks as if I can see my fave dr in a couple of weeks, so hopefully we can get everything done before hb goes away.

chocoholicworm - I can't believe the results came so quickly. What with all the 2ww we have to endure a quick turnaround on results sounds good to me! Think hb will like the sound of doing his test at home too, rather than in a sterile white room in some hospital! I hope you don't mind me asking, but were you referred on for any further tests after the initial ones? Just wondering what happens if all's well with ov and hb's end of things.

#annette# - tons of baby dust to you for a lovely BFP this month. When is af due?

I think your quite wise to get checked out, although if youve had regular periods etc im sure its nothing to worry about. It took me and hubby over 2yrs ttc and saw GP after 1st yr of trying. It really helps if you have an understanding Gp like ours was. I firstly was referred to a consultant and the waiting list was quite a long time. But while waiting i had to have blood tests done to check hormone levels etc. Hubby had to do his sperm tests too, which was quite funny trying to get the sample to the hosp in under an hr and telling them to test it quickly. These test results didnt take long at all. GP just gave us a form with a botttle and we didit the next day.

I eventually had investigations which i wont bore you with, but due to irregular periods etc.

All i will say is be prepared for intrusiveness (if thats a word?!) It made us realise how strong we were as a couple and how much we wanted a baby- The whole process became just that- a process! and in a way the whole "making love" thing was out the window. It became the main focus- timings and certain positions etc, medication. Try not to let it rule your life and ENJOY TRYING.

Good luck and remember if your GP doesnt give you much confidence, ask to see someone else.

Hope this helps
Hannah
