Argh...i'll give you a little back story before i go into what happened...

Every winter (even when he was 12 weeks old) JJ gets recurring chest infections (usually about 4 between December and March)and the doctor has always told us that it's one of those things and he'll grow out of it which we had accepted. Anyway, last September he had a really bad one (those of you on Facebook may remember us being fobbed off by Blackpool hospital with a temp of 39+ and lots of mucus being brought up when we were on holiday) which the cough lasted nearly 3 months, he had chest x-rays which showed nothing and the doctor said to try an inhaler to see if it helped which it did to the point the cough stopped and we stopped using it.

So, fast forward 8 weeks to last Friday, JJ woke up with a cough and a bit of a cold which we thought "oh here we go again"...the cough was fine all day until the middle of the night when he was getting a bit upset with it but it didn't seem particularly bad, have seen it much worse!

Yesterday morning however he woke up fine, asked for breakfast and started playing as normal (i went to work leaving him with hubby) but i got a call at 10am and i could hear J struggling for breath in the background. I told hubby to phone Out Of Hours at the hospital who told him to take him straight in. For once he didn't get fobbed off, the doctor was concerned and sent him straight through to the paeds department who saw us straight away (i had joined them by this point). His sats were terrible and the nurse got straight on the phone to get a dr down and he was immediately given steroids, calpol and 10 puffs of an inhaler. He gradually started showing signs of improvement but needed another 20 puffs of his inhaler before they were happy he had stabilised (they were about to give him iv magnesium at this point but he didn't need it thankfully)!!

Once he had stabilised they wanted to observe him regularly and keep giving him inhaler puffs so told us to prepare to stay the night but if he had improved by 8pm he would be allowed to go home (it was 4pm by this point) and have a care team come out to give him steroids and keep an eye on him morning and night. Anyway, he surprised them all and bounced back as quickly as he'd gone down, they'd said at 4pm he was to have 4 puffs of his inhaler every 2 hours but when they checked his chest at 6pm the dr was very happy and decided to let him last til 8pm which he did no problem so we were allowed home as long as we kept rigidly to the 4hrly inhalers and we're even allowed to give him the steroids ourselves!

Today he's like a different child, you would never believe how poorly he was yesterday!!

The stupid thing is that nobody has actually told us what caused this, he doesn't have an official asthma diagnosis so i don't know where to take it from here...I was thinking of getting a GP appointment and just demanding to know what is going on?? x

Oh what a drama hun, glad to hear he is better.

As you know Chloe has breathing issues and we have been round and round. If it were me I would be going to the gp and getting them to refer JJ to a paed who specialises in this kind of thing. As he seems to responds so well to the steriods and inhalers it suggests to me it is asthma but they are reluctant to label young children. However we have a formal diagnosis for Chloe.

We now have a regime to follow daily and a special one for when ill and the gp have a letter on file to refer to so when her chest is bad the paed has said what to give and when which is so helpful as we used to go time and time again and get fobbed off and end up with steriods at the end!!

She's just finished another course of steriods again and has some more to take if she starts to go downhill again as she isn't 100% still.

It make take some perservance but if you meet reluctance get them to check his history and don't leave til you get an answer or a referral
