Having spent most of my pregnancy declaring that i would only be usinig cloth nappies i have sadly found myself in the world of disposables.

I have struggled so much with cloth and dont know if it is just something that i am doing wrong. I have tried Mio nappies but these are really big on her and her legs are almost forced apart by them meaning that we had leaks around the legs. We then tried motherease sandys (as we got these free from our council) which are another 2 part nappy, after 2 hours the nappy was sopping and all her skin around her lower tummy and back was wet as there was nothing to draw the wee away it was just held by the towelling - also both parts are fastened by poppers and again getting a fit was hard and meant that the change took forever.

Finally i tried the v4 bumgenius which i thought would be the best. Again struggled with the fit around the legs and found that 2 hours later DD was soaked through - i cant do them up any tighter as she already had indentations from the elastic.

Short of changing her hourly i dont know what to do to stop the leaking/soaking of the nappies - anyone have any tips?

she is 4 weeks today and 8lbs 7oz.

I am currentky using the newborn inserts with the bumgenius and to be fair the sandys had only been washed once - will the retain the wee better after more washes?

with the bgs i'd probably try just using the large insert as it is a lot more absorbant than the newborn insert - it's quite squishy so should bunch up ok between her legs.

the sandys will need quite a few washes till they become more absorbant. you could also try using fleece liners in them to help keep baby more dry in them - you can either make your own (old fleece blankets are perfect) or buy some readymade (i like the junior joy white ones that come in a pack of 10)

the fit may improve as her legs fatten up and the difference between the popper settings won't seem so vast when she's got a bit bigger :\)

i never used the nb insert alone with my bgs. i have always used both together. also, they need to be washed at least 3 times id say before they are absorbant enough. i have never got on with poppers. i much prefer velcro fastening as you an get it exactly as you want it, but i guess it's just practice. you wil need to change every 2-3 hours though anyway probably

Ive found 2hrly changes are needed with BGs. Perhaps invest in some bamboo or hemp inserts and pop them in with the New born MF booster, the MF being closest to babys skin. We dont like poppers much either and will be sticking (haha) to the velcro!

Hope you figure out something that works for you!

Just thought, do you think the leaking is happening at the legs? If so it could be wicking. This is when the fabric from the vest or the trousers draws out the wee. YOu can get round this by having a looser fitting vesttrousers. Buy one size up or get vest extenders!

Oh hun, don't worry, the reusable thing takes a bit of trial and error but it's so worth it!

We use Mios, and at 8lbs 7oz my son wasn't in them yet, they were too big around the legs. Also, I found that I had to fold a part of the cloth nappy down first, making it shorter, before folding into thirds. The Size 1 Mio nappies just don't fit well enough inside the newborn size wrap using the 'conventional' fold, and so there's leakage problems. I think Jak went into them at about 6-8 weeks, at 4 weeks he definitely wasn't in them yet.

There is light at the end of he tunnel - we're still in them now at 12 months and I haven't bought a disposable since Easter. They do take some getting used to! Sorry, I can't comment on any of the other sorts of nappies as we don't use them, but HTH x x x

If the other EmilyB reads this, can I have my username back please?
