So I am 21+6 with my first and am planning on using reusables (under the condition that my husband gets me a tumble drier for Christmas :lol. I have done some research and am planning to get some form of one-size nappy but have no idea how many I should get to begin with. Can anyone give me some idea of what sort of numbers I should be looking at? If nothing else, it may help narrow the field based on budget!

I've got about 20 but that is more than enough! i work on the theory of having 1 set to wear, another set to wash and another set somewhere drying! but like i said thats more than enough. maybe get a set to start you off and see how you get on with 1 washing them, how many you use and also the particular type you buy. different people get on with different brands.
also you may not want to launch into re-usables straight away diposables are handy for a few weeks when coping with newborn /getting over labour etc.

I am definitely planning on getting some disposables for the first couple of days/weeks, but have reached the point where I am starting to buy clothes so thought I would start getting nappies sorted out as well. I really don't want to find myself (or rather the baby) caught short soon after the birth. As we don't have a car, buying things that aren't readily available at the local shops takes just that little bit longer, so I figure better to be prepared in advance. :\)

yep fully agree. I used little lamb reusables right up to 17mths with my daughter but now she wont lie down for big nappy changes and doesn't need so many in the day so have gone to disp and pull ups in the hope she potty trains soner rather than later but time will tell.
The set i got was 20 of the first size nappies with 10 wraps these lastest till about 5-6mths old then 20 of the size 2 with 10 wraps. I dont think i ever ran out provided i put the bucket full in the wash straight away then they had time to dry. I did use disp for the first week or so till meconium stopped and i was feeling abit better then just started using them and havent looked back. Still i use disp on holidays and flying etc.
I am about to get the first size back out the loft for new baby due xmas saving me more money as i already have the kit.
You need to get some in soon though as they usually need a wash before you put them on baby so you wont want to do that when they have arrived just want to get on with it.

I use birth to potty Bumgenius pockets. These are quick to dry and often don't need a tumble, just airer near or on a radiator.
I had 15 and washed every 2-3 days. However, i didn't start til about 5 months old. I actually got a few more recently and i must say about 20 is a good amount. You will settle into your own routine with them and it may change a bit as LO gets older.
Remember you'll need other bits like liners and a bin too. Oh, and i started by just using one a day, then 2 etc so i got used to them.
