teachers - maternity leave - Pregnancy

Does anyone know whether you have to include summer hols as part of your maternity leave? I'm due at the beginning of Sep, so was hoping to take leave from the first day back (officially) so that I'd have from July off in reality, but can I do this, or will it start from the last day I teach (which would be in July)?

My aunty was a teachers assistant and like you was due in sept and she broke up in the july but mat leave didnt officially start til the schools first day back. I shudnt have thought it was any different for teachers but im not sure. If i was u i would speak to the school (as sum employers work differently) or alternatively seek opinions from citizens advice or sumthing. Gud Luck Kerry xxx

I am due on July 10th and will start maternity in June. The summer holidays will be part of my maternity unfortunately! You can start your maternity leave whenever but it has to be a Sunday (bizarre I know!). So you could say you wanted it to start from September 1st for example and then you would get full pay over the summer hols still (unlike me!) and your maternity pay will start in september, but our maternity package isn't bad at all .

I am sure hols are included as work time, so you're mat leave would start after the hols. There are a few other teachers on here and my sis is one (first babe now 13 months) so I can ask her and let you know. xx

Hi cat...i'm a teacher...not pregnant yet as get married in march but have been researching maternity leave.

Unfortunately maternity leave is part of the summer hols which is a pain as we get paid then anyway. I know i can't control things but am aiming to try and get pregnant asap after to avoid being due in the hols.

I'd just check your schools policys. Unfortunately i didn't look into this when starting the job many years ago and as its private they give you the statutory maternity pay...state schools get a far better package.

Sorry forgot to add that it would be fine to have maternity from the sept...i misread...if you had been due on 1st august for example it would start then.

a good 6 weeks off before the birth to relax x

I'm a teacher but I'm doing the opposite to you. I am going back on the books as it were on last day of term so i can get paid over summer and start back with new term. Works quite well.

I'm a Teacher and 24+4, if you are due at the beginning of sept then you get the whole of the summer hols paid as normal and put your official maternity leave date as 1 Sept (or similar).

Unfortunately if your little one comes earlier then your maternity will automatically start from the birth date (of course!). I will only get paid maternity pay over the summer but thats because I will already be on leave - if i have read your email correctly then you wont need to leave until Sept.

I'm a teacher and your mat leave will start at start of new term, or when lo is born, if lo comes early during the hols.
I'm also jammy as my leave ends as the summer hols begin! 1st day of hols = full pay once again!

I plan to do the same as you...it all depends when i fall pregnant but would go back on the books for the last week of the summer term so i could get paid for the hols.

hiya, I'm a teacher.. my lo is 12 weeks old no. She wasnt due till 22nd oct (07) but i decided to take maternity leave from the day i wouldve been due back (3rd sept 07) So i got paid as usual for the summer hols and then started the maternity leave. You've got great timming! x x

I'm a teacher and my son was due on 29th August last year and I started my maternity leave on 29th August last year. It was fantastic timing as I had 5 and half weeks holiday time, with pay, before I started my maternity leave.

if your a lucky one like me, and your due between july n end of august your holidays are classed as holidays and u start them a day before your due date. you should also get a lump sum for your holiday dues at the end of mat leave that u can either take off as extended as we are all now allowed an extra 6mths unpaid or you can treat yourself to something nice

That is exactely th topic I am most concerned about at the moment. I will hand in my maternity leave request in TOMORROW together with my mat b1 form. I have requested the 1 September as out summer term ends on the 31August. I am also a teacher. So fingers crossed. The problem: I am on an extended maternity contract and the teacher I have been covering for almost 2 yeras could potentially hand in her return notice at any stage now because like that she could get paid over the summer. The school could then send me a 2 month notice letter and I would need to start my maternity leave on the 17 July. So far so good but I am stressed. Hope to make it into June without a notice letter as I deserve paid summer holidays. I have been working a lot!

I was due in September and started my mat leave from the day the children started back after summer hols - you can technically not start your mat leave until your due date - it worked out that way for my frined cos of summer hols.

So can you put your return to work day as the first day of the summer hols then or do you actually have to go in beforehand? My baby is 10 weeks old at the moment and I don't really want to have to go back in July unless I absolutely have to (I want to start back properly in Sept but would like to get paid over the summer hols). Any help here would be gratefully received.

Hi - Im a teacher, and 2 of my colleagues were due in sept, but they came back after the summer for a few days and then went off, so that the summer didnt count for them xx

Ok may be weird for me to say this on here ive read som of this and now im goimg onto a totally different subject but I'm a student and my teacher is going on a maternity leave in April Easter term, she said she will be coming back after Christmas or September I can't really remember but her name is down In a booklet for teaching a subject next year for GCSE, I'm taking my GCSEs next year, since this teacher said she will be back do you think she will or will she change her mind once the baby comes along? I think she is only in her 20s and she seems to like her job but does anyone know what you think could happen? She said she is coming back so does that mean she has to, or will it change her mind? I don't think she is married but she is only young and will be teaching art BTEC next year? Will the cover teacher take over forever? I'm asking it on here cause a few of you seam like you will know?
