i'm 8 weeks pregnant and i'm thinking of booking a private ultrasound. i've not had any contact from my midwife yet so can see it being a while before i get my nhs ultrasound scan. my dh is woried that something will go wrong and has said he can't relax till we've had the first scan. Do you think it's worth booking for a private scan, we're not rolling in money but we could just about afford one, has anyone had any experience of private ultrasounds. Do you think it would be worth it or should i just try to reassure him that everything will be ok??

Hi,

I wasn't aware I was pregnant until after 12 weeks so the 1st scan I received was from the hospital however I had a private 4d scan at 27 weeks which was fantastic.

It's really up to you what you do but I would say you'll be fine babes & if you think about it you only get 12 week, 20 week & 34 week scans with NHS anyway so your waiting in between for ages!
Hope this helps & all the best of luck with your pregnancy.

you should hear from ur midwife within 2 weeks of seeing your doctor she will then book in for a scan usually between 11-14wks by your dates, depends where u are and if u have an nt scan too, i was lucky had min at 12wk+2.
so you shouldnt have too long to wait.
congratulations.xxx

Definitely worth it babe! I was diagnosed with polysystic ovary syndrome so had very irregular periods had ultra sound and they found a cyst on one of my ovaries, we were also seeking fertility treatment so was having regular trips to hospital. I wasnt feeling very well one day and booked in to see doctor to get some antibiotics thought it was tonsilitus. Hadnt done pregnancy test for 3 months as thought it was highly unlikely would get pregnant as had only had one period in 5 months. Anyway sorry im waffling i did test came up positive but on test it said an ovarian cyst can give a false reading. At an ultra sound scan i had booked for next day due to cyst the sonographer said she saw what could of been a pregnancy sac but my dates from my one and only period suggested i would be 5 weeks pregnant so no heartbeat at this stage. The fertility clinic congratulated me on my pregnancy but i still didnt beleive it. Even though i started throwing up at the end of that week you do doubt yourself and i thought i was making myself feel that way. My original booking in with midwife was 8 weeks and my first scan was at nearly 15 weeks! I just burst into tears it was like an emotional rollercoaster with the not knowing. Also didnt want to tell any one until it had been confirmed but it was so difficult as i was being sick all the time. We decided to pay private for a scan at ten weeks as i couldnt keep it a secretanylonger. We went to a place called MUMS which was recomended by my midwife. I dont know if they are just midland based, but i had what they refer to as a dating scan the cost was ??75 it lasted half an hour and you got photos and a video could pay extra for dvd. Best day of my life as we told everybody that afternoon. They used to call your dating scan a 12 week scan butthey are putting them back further and further on the nhs due to a baby boom!! However this babyboom is actually a foreign baby boom as apparently the birth rate in british parents is on the decline, sorry personal grievance . Hope this has helped you justify the cost x

hey, i had a private scan as i didn't know how far gone i was i knew i was between 8-10 weeks at the time.the reason i wanted one was because i had no symptoms and just seemed to have got it into my head that something was wrong! anyway it cost me ??100 but it was so worth it! i was 9 week and 3 days and cos its done in 3d i saw the legs moving and could see the toes! it looked so cute! also i got to hear the heartbeat too which was great. as soon as i had that done the next day i got my letter through for my nhs scan!! which was 2 weeks later! i had that done 2day ( i am 11 week 4 days, so got mine early!)and it was amazing just to see how much it had grown!! i had a midwife and a trainee midwife do my scan 2day and it took them a while to measure baby but that was becos it was being a pain and just wouldnt stay still! it kept jumping and turning round!! they gave me a due date 2 days earlier than my private one but everybody measures differently and is hard when baby is moving!! now it looks like a baby! where as at 9 weeks it looked like a prawn with legs haha. anyway it really put my mind at ease having the private scan as i just couldn't relax! i will put my new scan pic on later!! xx

Hi Girlinleeds,
Wat is it that is making u think there is something wrong? Because if uve had no pain or bleeding or anything to suggest that there might be a problem i wud wait until ur NHS scan. I only say this coz i had an emergency scan in my last pregnancy at 8wks, and at that point its not a baby its just a blob with a heart beat, at 12wk scans u can see so much mur. I wud save the money u have and have a private one later on in ur pregnancy. However if ur worried that there is something wrong u shud go back to ur doctor. Kerry xxx

Hi hun,
You should find out whether or not your NHS hospital has a early pregnancy unit. I had a miscarriage 2 years ago, so when I got pregnant this time, I wanted to make sure all was ok..(my PCT only offers a 20 week scan!)...give them a ring and ak...

Good luck

Hi,
I had a private scan last week for the same reasons as you - I had heard nothing from the midwife and was told that I was about 8/9 weeks by the doctor. When I had the scan we found out I was only 5 weeks and all you can see is a round blob.
It am now more worried now than before I had my scan and wish I would have left it.
The midwife called me at the begining of this week if I had only waited I probably would not of had the scan after recieving reassurance from the midwife. We spent ??80 we didnt have and def would not be able to afford it again (thinking about it now i would of rather saved the money and had it done when I am a bit far gone.
My advise to you would be hang on in there and wait another week to see if the midwife calls you.

hi ladies thanks for all your replies, it's actually my dh that's more worried then me, i've got endometriosis and have been having a lot of one sided pain but i can't quite decide if it's my endo or something else. My dh is very worried that it's not my endo and because we we're basically told have a baby now or possibly never, he's worried that if anything did go wrong we might not get pregnant again. I think i'll wait till then end of the week and if i haven't heard anything try to get in contat with the midwife and then see how long it will be to the scan.

if u are concerned, i would go to the doctor and tell her/him u have pain and they may well ring up there and then and book u into the early preg unit and get a scan set up for u b4 midwife.xx

Hi!

We had a private scan.. Cost £100.. It was really good for reassurance!  They dated me at 8+4 (10th Oct due date) at the time although I dated myself at 9+3 (6th Oct due date) and when I went for my NHS 12 week/dating scan they said my due date was 5th Oct and that's the due date they'll use. My hubby was like yours and didn't want to wait til 12 week scan lol! Ended up being an internal scan because I hadn't drunk enough water before hand but I found it to be fine and a smear test to be more uncomfortable!  They gave us photos and a little written report on their 'findings' and they gave us a guided tour of my womb ovaries etc! Lol! You could see the baby - Head, body, arm and leg buds and the yolk sac (?) which is what supports the baby until the placenta is fully formed. I'd personally recommend it although I underststand others may not.  We used a company called Babybond - Ultrasound-direct.com and we'll most likely use them again for our 3/4d scan later on.

Best of Luck!

I had a great experience with the Sonographer at Beehive ultrasound in Essex, I have booked another scan for reassurance and looking forward to it. They also said that I can ring them any time and they will fit me in. Really pleased with the scan.
