Prawn Crackers!!

Hello - this is my first post.

I found out on Sunday I am pregnant, about 5 weeks. I've read up on what I can't eat and tonight my husband made a chicken stir-fry for us. I stupidly ate some prawn crackers (from M&S), had about 10, then it hit me what I was eating. I think because they are crisp things I didn't assosciate them with being prawns - the packet says "WARNING, CONTAINS SHELLFISH 17%".

Have I done any damage or risked my baby? What is the reason for not eating prawns.
I;m in a bit of a panic now!

Your thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks
Rach

First of all congratulations!

And second of all please don't worry! I think the reason you can't eat prawns is because of the higher risk of food poisoning, but I'm sure that's not the case with prawn crackers, especially those in a packet from M&S!

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has other info though xxx

As long as all food is cooked to above 75 centigrade, it should be fine to eat- I would have thought they have to heat prawn crackers up loads to get them into the shape they are in! Last time I saw my mw she said that the reason for these things is food poisoning and the detrimental effect that has on the baby. She also said your no more likely to get food poisoning now than you were before you got pregnant so if you've usually got a strong stomach I wouldn't worry too much and eat what you like- but if you don't then make sure everything is fully heated- you can buy food probes if your worried, but I would just be sensible about it! xx

Hi Rach

Ive eaten prawn crackers every Friday with my chinese takeaway so please dont worry!

You can eat prawns as well although Im careful and only have them in reputable restaurants where I know they are fresh.

Take Care

Thanks for all your replies
I just did some "googling" and most websites say prawn crackers should be fine - never found anywhere that said avoid.

I only went to the doctors this morning and haven't been assigned a mid wife, she will contact me soon.

However, with what I have read on about 10 other websites and the above, I won't worry anymore.

Thanks all
Rach

Prawn crackers are absolutly fine to eat hun so dont worry at all, you wont have done baby any harm... Prawns themselves are actually ok to eat as long as they are properly cooked... its just raw shellfish that u have to avoid.

Congrats, heres to a happy and healthy 9 months x
