Hi ladies

I'm just starting to look into pushchairs and travel systems which is a whole new world to me (pregnant with our first). :\?

I had originally thought we'd get a travel system with a carrycot to use when baby is newborn. However, while they look really cosy and like they'd be great for winter babies, I am due in June and wonder if we'd get much use out of it in the summer months. I know you only use them for a few months so not sure if it would be an unnecessary expense?

Am now thinking about a pramette style that can be laid flat to use from birth - I like the look of the Silver Cross Surf, OBaby Zezu and the iCandy Peach (last one maybe outwith budget though!!)

Anyway, please let me know if you think a carrycot is worthwhile or is it a waste of money?

Thanks all xxx

For us, our carrycot got a lot of use. We have a travel system and sometimes we used the carseat, but often used the carrycot. Yes, they get outgrown, but we also used it as a daybed in the house for his naps. It's now being used as a daytime bed for our second child. so well worth the money.

our first was born in May 2009 and it was scorching but I used the carry cot for aggggges! everyone kept telling me you only use it for a little while but we used it for at least 6 months. probably much longer!

We use ours every day. By contrast my sister bought a silver cross 3d with no removable carrycot and she said she really wished she' had a carry cot x

My LO is 13 weeks and we still use the carrycot. It's obviously great for walks etc but she sleeps in it at night too. We did buy a moses basket but after about 4 weeks she wouldn't settle in the moses basket so we were very thankful that we had the carry cot. I originally wanted both so that I wouldn't need to carry either the moses basket or the carry cot up and down our stairs, in reality, it's not a problem. It's also been great for when we go to my parents (which involves an overnight stay) rather than having to bring a travel cot. x

Edited to add we have the mamas and papas rubix and it's been great x

Hi hun

Poppy still uses hers all the time at 5 months (but we will probably have to go to the next stage soon...head at the top and toes at the bottom now!!)

Poppy was born 2nd July and we have used it the whole time - tbh is was handy as it had a hood which helped keep sun off her. She also uses it for naps in the day.

It has been pretty invaluable!!

P.S. We have the Babystyle Oyster (in purple) xxx

I have had a Jan baby and a June baby and didn't use the carry cot hardly at all! We have a Graco travel system and we found with the car seat fitted they were much happier and cosier than in the carry cot. Both my los used a moses basket to sleep in until they were about 11 weeks old. xx

Thank you for all your replies. Good to know that most of you found a carrycot useful - might have to go back to the original plan and start looking again! At least I have ages yet so I can spend a bit of time researching to make sure I get the right one! xxx

When I had DD I had a Graco travel system with car seat and HATE it, plus they arent supposed to be in a car seat for longer than 2 hours at a time due to it not being good for their backs. The pram itself is horrible it doesnt steer well and is very heavy and is more like it has bricks than wheels.

For this baby I have just bought the Zoom from Mamas and Papas, I believe its some sort of special edition thing but has a seat that can face parent or away and can lie flat, it also comes with a carry cot and the car seat can also attach to the frame if you buy some adaptor things. The pram incl carry cot is ??????295 and with the carseat I paid ??????395, the pram is lovely and light and looks good too.

Heres a link to it

i had a carycot too. t depends how much room you have at home as we are now storing a carrycot. the mothercare spin is a good compromise. and a car seat is not an alternative to a cerrycot. they are for car rides and short trips only!

we used the car seat more than the carrycot and LO outgrew the carry cot at 12 weeks, however it is a great option to use if you can get it, out pram wasnt suitable without carseat/carrycot until baby was 4 months as the straps were huge x

We purchased the silvercross surf and this has a baby nest for the baby so they can sleep flat and when they get bigger the wedge can be removed but the best stays in and then when they get bigger the whole nest can come out. We originally had a buggy that a carry cot attached to but it was so heavy and large that we changed it for the surf. Picking a pram is a tough choice but I went for practicality and use when we picked the surf. X

From my understanding the car seat is fine to use for longer as long than 2 hours when it is attached to the travel system as it is laid back compared to how upright you need to have it in the car for it to be safe.
Despite that I am pretty sure any occassions when my los would have been riding in their travel systems for over 2 hours at a time at that age were extremely rare.
Remember as well that you can always go and buy extra things if you feel you need them once your lo arrives. x

Liz, there are studies to show that upright position in the car can affect the babies oxygen saturation levels when they're tiny so it is slightly better in the travel system for longer times so that their necks don't slouch onto their chests and they can breath more easily. However, you still shouldn't keep them there for more than 2 hours in a car seat on a travel system as the scrunched up position of the harness can affect hip and back development.

I've opted for a Jane Matrix Light Solo reverse travel system that offers a lie-flat car seat which can be used as a car seat or a carry cot for any length of time. The car seat is size 0+ (as it can also be used in a sitting position) so they can stay in it up to about a year. I love that the pushchair bit can still be rear facing as I can't wait to walk and chat with my baby once s/he has outgrown the car seat as a lie-flat!
