migraines

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if anyone's had a similar experience to this really. I've also suffered from migraines since my teens some without an aura and then the really debillitating ones where I have a visual aura that lasts about an hour first. In the last few years, I've only had the ones with aura every 6 months to a year though which was good.

So far this pregnancy I haven't had any migraines until Sat when I got one with aura that lasted right through till Sun night. I got another one yesterday morning and now I've had three in the space of 24 hours. Just as I think I'm feeling better the aura starts again and I can't see! I got really panicked last night and went to the walk in centre. The dr was quite reassuring although he couldn't do much and I felt a bit better. But now, another one has started this morning and I'm terrified again. I've never had one after the other like this before despite having them for nearly 20 years and I'm scared it's something more serious. Plus I'm worried about the baby - I can't even tell if I still feel pregnant because all I can feel is migraine symptoms. Has anyone else had this? Do you think I'll seem neurotic if I go back to the walk in centre or even to A & E? Sorry it's so long!

Hi, I also have suffered with migraine since about 15 years old. I have two sons aged 11 and 12, and a little girl on the way. With all my pregnancies the migraines have come thick and fast! With my first I also had an incident where I had slurred speach for a few hours, with my youngest I went completely blind for four hours. I was half expecting that I might get one of these symptoms again, but last Tuesday my migraine went overboard! I couldn't talk, move or open my eyes for over two hours, then over the next three I started very slowly getting back to normal, My hubby thought I was asleep, luckily my youngest realised something was wrong. I was rushed to hospital. It was like being in a coma, totally aware but unable to communicate in any way! I saw Drs and a midwife, and the GP the next day. Babies are not effected at all by migraines, however bad, but if you get really stressed, they can feel that. I would go to your GP to be reasured, its a horrid horrid thing to go through and so painful, but baby doesn't feel a thing.

Good luck, hope it clears up for you at some point xxx

Oh so sorry to hear you are suffering with horrible migraines. I too have been getting constant migraines over the past few weeks and of course you can't take any pain killers that will touch them so I find the only solution is bed and those migraine ice strips are quite good to help ease the real throbbing.
I haven't been suffering them anywhere near as badly as you have but I think that headaches and migraines are part of the course of pregnancy and because you have suffered from very bad ones in the past those are the ones that are coming back. I would ring your doctors or midwife and tell them how you are feeling and tell them you are worried and see what they say!
Big hugs hun xx

thanks both of you, that does make me feel a bit more reassured that it's not just me. Lorimumto2, your experience last week sounds horrendous, I don't know how I'd cope with that! I think it'd take my partner a while to realise that I wasn't just asleep too. SummerMummy, you've just reminded me that cool strips would be a good idea, spent most of last night trying to balance one of my OH's cold Stella's on my head instead, which wasn't very easy!

The doc last night told me if they carried on to consider taking a triptan like I normally do but I'm really not sure. They make me feel very detatched from reality at the best of times so I'm not sure it's a good plan while pregnant. I'm going to contact my GP though and see what they say. I hope you both feel better soon too xx

Susie make sure they take you BP next time you hvae a migraine to make sure that is not what is triggering them as just becasue you normally get them doesn't mean that something isn't initiating them and if your BP is up they need to treat your BP as that can effect the baby.

Good luck and I hope you improve. x

Thanks babyonboard, he did take my blood pressure last night and seemed to think it was ok. I think he said it was 124 over 70 - does that sound like a normal bp reading? x

Hi Susie, Yes that sounds normal, just make sure they keep an eye on it. Did he take it while you had a migraine? If not get it done when your migraine sets in just to be sure. I know you may think this is rubbish but I have been trying head-on for my headaches as sometimes I get migranes too and although it doesn't always work, if I catch it early enough it does seem to take the edge off. I think it's called 4head in the UK. Good luck hun I hope you feel better soon. x

Thanks, I've seen that advertised but never tried it until now so I'll give it a try. By the time we saw the dr, the pain was wearing off so it was almost the tail end of the migraine when he took my bp. Next time I'll get them to do it at the beginning to be sure. x
