Measuring large for dates

Hi Ladies,

I've just come back from a midwife appointment at 33+4 weeks and apparently we are measuring 36 weeks!

All through the pregnancy we have been spot on so not sure how to take this.

It was a different midwife who did the measuring so could partly be that but not sure we'd be 3 weeks out from that??

We're having a scan for low lying placenta on friday so the midwife has asked us to get them to focus on measuring baby etc to see whether its excess water or baby causing the difference.

Should I be worried or does this happen a lot and all is fine?

My SIL was told she was measuring small to begin with and then she was told that her measurements were spot on. She then went into hospital at 36 weeks because she thought her waters had broken (they hadnt) and was told she was measuring 3 weeks ahead! I dont think it is an exact science to be honest and it varies from midwife to midwife, but they will tell you more at your scan, I doubt it is anything to worry about. My neice is perfect, although she was a 9lb newborn xx

Don't worry, its very common. I have only been measured by the same midwife during my pregnancy, but i think she didn't want to refer me to the extent that at one appointment she measured me four times pulling the tape tighter each time until it was only one week ahead.

At my 38 week appointment i have finally been referred for growth checks.

There are lots of reasons for measuring big other than giant babies, sometimes it is just the way they are lying. I'm sure it will all go well for you x

Hey, I have always measured 2 weeks ahead and no problems at all - I just have a v tall bubba as me and hubby are tall. I was a guninea pig for the final year med students and the dr examining them said the measuring of the bump is most inaccurate way to measure babies and she's always much more worried about small bumps that don't grow than bigger ones. Also 2 weeks either way is about normal so you're only a few days out so i wouldn't worry xx

hi

you're right it't not that accurate, it is a bit subjective, the bone that they measure from at the bottom is 2 cms in width generally anyway so sometimes they can go for a different bit on the bone! Also baby's position can alter where the top of the uterus is. Up until a few years ago nobody measured, midwives went on instinct and experience - but it was decided everyone should have a baseline to go by - its also important for midwives to use instinct and experience alongside the measuring! When you see lots of pregnant tummies you get an eye for whats looking large or tiny or ok.

also, baby's can have abit of a spurt and then slow down and even out. I think its likely that since your last appointment the baby has grown at a faster rate despite all of the above - although it may well be ok and will even out - its still important you have the scan, but i wouldnt loose sleep over it as its so common at this stage to have scans for being big/small and more often than not all is ok x

Thanks ladies - feeling better reading your replies.

She mentioned something about the fluid so of course like an idiot I googled it and ended up coming across fetal anaemia and rhesus sensitivity (even though I've had anti-ds).
I'm not fussed if her is big at all so long as he is healthy.

Hiya! As it happens I had the m/w yesterday at 33+3 and measured 36 weeks so exact same situation. I've been having growth scan so she knows that baby is 'average' and that the fluid is normal. She just put it down to my 'extra padding'! x

Hi

Had the midwife today and my scan result showed that baby is measuring on the 100th percentile for my dates. So he is the biggest possible within the 'normal' range.

They have said that they will continue to monitor his size and if we measure that big again it might be a few more scans and at the 'worst' and early induction if he is still big. Today at 35+4 he measured 37 so I think this is a good sign that he hasn't grown since 2 weeks ago - I have always said I KNEW he had a big growth spurt around the time of the scan as I was so uncomfy, sretched and skin all itchy. Here's hoping that in 2 weeks he will still be 37cm or thereabouts.

There was a mix up at the hospital as their computers were down so the midwife is also checking whether I will need a GTT - really hoping not as I think although he's big he is not above the normal range really and we are so close to the end now. I might try to keep an eye on my diet a bit too and make sure I'm eating super healthily now.

The GTT sounds a bit minging as tests go.

Just check out the previous thread about polhydramnious and please, please get them to check blood sugars as soon as she is born. Probably no problem but I'm making it my life's purpose to increase blood checking at birth especially in big babies.

Thanks,
H xx

Hi

I don't think we have any worried of polyhydraminos as all my fluid levels look fine.

They are keeping a close eye.

My youngest measured big all through my pregnancy and i was sent for growth scans. The mw warned me that i was expecting a large baby. He was 7lb when he was born, the smallest of my 3 children. x

It happened with me when I was carrying DD, she measured spot on until wk38 when she suddenly measured 41 as she was engaged to a certain depth and had shifted everything (they told me to expect her any time so you can imagine my dissappointment when she went 8days overdue). She was (and still is) a very long baby which was the main reason as she started to stretch out whilst descending, could be a possible reason for your difference.

Well all is fine and the midwife was just a panicky freak!

They say his head is measuring larger - 90th centile and the rest of him is fine so his head was skewing the estimated weight calculation.

They've said they think in reality he was probably more like 5.5lbs which is much more average so not a big baby and they worried us for nothing.

Still better to be safe! Thanks for your help x
