Heartbeat 160BPM - boy or girl?

01/04/2008 at 11:55
I've heard that a high heartbeat rate indicates a baby girl. At my antenatal appointment this morning my little one's heartbeat was between 150-160 beats per minute so I'm thinking it's a girl. What do you think? For those of you who know the sex of your baby how fast is their heartbeat?? I love guessing games!!

to be honest i don't think the heart rate matters i think it is another wives tale and zoe's prob says that best! as hers is a girl and is a low heart rate. they thought mine was a girl at 16 weeks gender scan but i don't know the speed of the heartbeat! they never told me at my 16 week app when she listened to it and she never wrote it down either. so i'm no hope at all! xx

Hi I heard the heart rate slows down later in pregnancy, not sure what my girls is now but she was about 150 around 15/16 weeks so you might be right.

They definitely say boys have a faster heartbeat. I'm having a boy and his is always above 140, they say girls tend to be lower than 140.

Hope this helps....

old wives tale....high heart beat =girl (over 140 bpm) low = boy (under 140 bpm). However, several people on here in the past have proved this wrong. Although its a good guessing game if you dont know!

Apparently in the first and 2nd trimester the baby will have a high heart rate even if its a boy. Also, a babys heart beat will also vary between high and low so it really depends upon when your babys heart beat was measured as to if it fits in with the old wives tale.

Does it say on your scans what the heart beat is, if so where? Im just curious to know what mine is! xxx

here are some more old wives tales for fun...

Hi, knp mum here, been to hospital with knp today as she is in labour (april forum for topics). We asked the midwife about this and she said they cannot tell by the heartbeat which is something we have wondered all the way through....

Hi, my midwife told me that she normally guessed correctly depending on how quickly or how much the heartbeat slowed down in the 2nd trimester. She did say it wasn't always 100% but normally one slowed much quicker than the other, can't for the life of me rememeber which it was though sorry!
I know my little boys heartbeat was 163 at 12 weeks and went down to around 140 by 28 weeks.

When pg with dd, her bmp only went up from 140ish to 160 in the last month or so! We knew she was a girl tho or would've thought she was our 3rd boy, as my boys were always 130-140. We can but guess!

My midwife used to tell me steady as a train - boy and rythmic like a horse galloping - girl. She said the BPM can change but the general sound would tend to stay the same.

I found with both my boys and girls the heart rate varried, on one of my sons he was around 130 then when I was monitored it peaked to 189! I am expecting a girl in just under 2 weeks and so far her heart rate as been between 136 and 144, it was 136 at my 37 week check.

Take care xxxxx

I guess it goes to show you never can tell! It's fun guessing though! It is an old wives tale but there's a 50/50 chance it's going to be right for some mums-to-be!! xxxx
