Hi Girls,

After watching one born every minute last night..and seeing that lady scream while having a pessary inserted...

Does it actually hurt? and whats it like??

Ive never really heard anyone talking in detail about pessaries...and in birth storys they kind of just say..pessary was inserted..blah blah blah.

So can you girls tell me...what its like having it? how long is it in there for? how far in does it go? how big is it?

I always thought it was a painfree..put a little thing inside like you do with a tampon (same size and cant feel it once its there?)

G/C from Dec 08 - Honestly, when I had it, it really wasn't that bad! It depends how high your cervix is - if your body is ready to labour, it's apparently not too bad, but I was induced at 39 weeks and the midwife had a lot of trouble getitng to mine, but I managed with just a couple of swear words and some evil glares at DH.

It's tiny, just on the end of the midwife's finger, and you're right, can't feel it all - all you feel (TMI!) is the midwife's finger applying it.

Hi Hun, when I had a still birth a couple of years ago and I had one inserted! It's inserted just behind the cervix so quite a bit deeper than a tampon. I found it really uncomfortable and quite hard not to squirm around so I was given a quick puff on the gas and air while she did it.

It's over in a few seconds though and is nothing compared to labour! Xxxx

Hi there. I was 12 days late with my 1st baby and had several induction attempts, inc. 3 stretch and sweeps! Don't remember the pessary being that bad but the worst thing was having my cervic opened MANUALLY! By a male doctor as well - very embarrassing and even more painful than the 7.5 hours of labour (followed by emergency c-section). I screamed and shot up the bed when I heard it 'crack' open! The pain was incredible. I think the other ladies on the ward must've thought I was in labour, hehe.

Avoid induction if possible. It's painful in itself, it makes for a painful labour and more chance of intervention. I remember the prostaglandin gel giving me immense pain, so bad I could hardly walk to the tv room. And all that was BEFORE I went into labour!

C-sections are a doddle in comparison - so glad I don't have to go through labour again

I had one a couple of years ago with my first - it wasn't pleasant and it did hurt. To be honest for me it didn't really do that much - about 3cm in 5 hours. But the drip - I started on that at about 4pm and lil lady arrived just before 11pm the same day.

It's nothing compared to labour but all those stories of forgetting the pain very quickly are true. Short term pain for a long term gain was well worth it for us

Hello,

I don't remember it hurting, just uncomfortable like a vaginal examination or a sweep. Once in there, it dissolves.

Mine worked well as one pessary kick started my labour and my little girl was born after 4 hours!

Good luck, xx

Hi

I think it depends on the person.

Unfortunately I found mine excruciating and actually the worst part of the long 36 hour labour.
But I do have a history of endometriosis on the back of my cervix, the midwife I had was not exactly gentle and probably find it more difficult to relax.
If I had to have it again I would make them wait for me to relax rather than just take it.
