Exercising whilst pregnant

Hi Ladies,

I am 8 weeks pregnant so its very early days and I'm obviously trying to do everything I can to ensure it all goes well (such a worry the first 12 wks!)
I joined a gym before finding out and want to go and do a bit of light cardio or some classes and I know that advice says if you are into exercise/fit before you get pregnant then its fine to carry on, but is it ok to start if I didn't do much before?!
I have an active life in general, I'm always running around plus I walk lots and have a dog too so I wouldn't say I'm massively unfit! Before BFP I was doing around 30 mins on the cross trainer a few days a week so hardly anything but I'd like to do this plus some swimming and maybe yoga or pilates too.

Advice appreciated - thanks!

Hi Ipanema1,

I would say a little light cardio would be fine. The main thing is to not get too overheated and to not let your heartrate get too high. I would avoid the pilates and yoga until you are past the 12 week mark and to be honest most teachers would say the same. There is only a slight chance that it would cause a problem but they have to cover themselves.

Hope that helps a little. Congratulations and good luck with the next 7 months.

As long as its not strenuous exercise you should be fine
Swimming is meant to be really good, I'd take up that with a little light exercise.

Thanks girls for replying, that's really helpful!

I'm off for a swim at lunch today and will see how I go with a bit of cardio then maybe look for a pregnancy yoga class for when I have passed the 12 week mark.

Thanks for the congrats!

Hi, yoga is a great way out, I joined yoga classes when I had 4 months and it helped me a lot to reduce pain in labour, you may read this info https://saymommy.com/mom_1123_advantages-parental-yoga.html hope it'll help. Good luck!
