Does leaking amniotic fluid smell sweet? (apologies if TMI!)

Hi Ladies
For about the last 2 weeks I have noticed that my discharge smells REALLY sweet. I was wondering if this could actually be amniotic fluid that is slowly leaking out? Does anyone know?

hi,

i asked about this as was having what felt like a lot of discharge a few weeks and i was told that amniotic fluid has a very distinctive smell and is quite sweet and apparantly i would 'know' if it was amniotic fluid as opposed to normal discharge....

not wanting to worry you as it prob isnt and im not an expert but if there is a distinctive smell thats not like normal i would say get it checked out just to be on the safe side...

This suggests that amniotic fluid smells sweet - other places talk about it not smelling at all! I'd contact your midwife and ask. If it is possible there are tests that they can do to check whether it is amniotic fluid or not.

I think it does actually - I'd def get it checked out if there's been a change in your discharge just in case. X 39+4

Hi

I dont want to worry you, but I would get it checked out today. I thought my waters were leaking at 28 weeks, to be told that they weren't and I had probably just leak urine. Well im sorry, I know which hole the fluid came from!!! But I excepted their dcecision.

Then at 36 weeks, I was having the same symptoms ( excess watery discharge) and had been having it for weeks and didnt think anything of it, as it was exactly the same as before. I mentioned it at my MW appointment and it was found i had been leaking for weeks and i got induced a couple of hours later and had to be hooked up to drips to stop infection etc.

I dont remember there being any smell, but the most embarassing thing was they asked to see my pad, so i took it off and they looked at it and then the MW smelt it right in front of me! I didnt know where to look!

So although it possibly is nothing, its best to check with your MW as it only takes as little as 10 minutes for them to check. They just do a vaginal examination and see if there is a pooling of fluid at the back of your vagina. Nicki
