Hi girls,

Do any of you suffer with IBS and how does that affect your pregnancy? I have just found out I am nearly 5 weeks and I have IBS. I have had a upset tummy for three days now and not sure if this is just because of the IBS or that i have a bug?

You often get the trots (sorry but the D word is too hard to spell) in the first few weeks - its your uterus contracting and moving around getting ready for the baby to settle down and grow. I had it with both my pregnancies and know I've read on here lots of girls had the same!

But see your Dr if you are worried if could be IBS!

Hi

I'm due in 3/4 weeks and I have had IBS for years and sadly all through my pregnancy!
I had an upset tummy and as long as you recognise your symptoms from previous IBS outbreaks then you should be ok.
I have horrible cramping pains and diarrhoea and hubby and MW get worried but I know these symptoms from previous outbreaks so I reassure them!

Some women find their IBS goes away during pregnancy but mine has stayed the same.

Take care hun

Hi honey.
I dont personally, but my mum suffers with something very similar to IBS and had 4 babies without a problem. Try sticking to really bland foods like dry toast etc for a few days to see if this helps? I got an upset stomach early on with this one, and never found out whether it was a bug or a symptom, but it did go away after a few days!
Oh i really do love seeing you pop up on here for pg advice lol, i'm sooo excited for you!

Grrrr silly BE ate my reply!!!

I have chron's which is similar to IBS, I do still suffer, the same as before preg, but I'm trying really hard to keep it under control!

I think you should just let your doc/midwife know, & they'll be able to give you info! I'm seeing my IBD consultant on Monday, so if I find out any useful tips there, I'll let you know!!

I have had IBS now for years and was managing it through my diet and a high intake of activia yoghurts but luckily since I've been pregnant it has eased off dramatically. I hope its the same for you x

Thank you girls, it feels really funny asking stuff on here i feel like i need to be in ttc lol

Thats eased my mind then, if most girls get upset tummy's I was a little worried as it's only happened the last few days but that has made me feel loads better and I will tell the doctor when i see him.

What will be the first thing the doctor does?? Will he need a blood test from me, do i take my preg tests?

I dont have IBS but since getting my BFP two weeks ago I have had loads of bouts of diarrogh (cant spell!!), my stomach also feels like its full of gas - hmmmm this pregnancy lark is glamorous isnt it! x

i have IBS with various symptoms. after my first two BFPs i had the runs. this time round i've been more constipated. i would speak to your doc if you are concerned. i raised it with mw and she asked if i was on medication, to which i said no.

i came down with a stomach bug at 5 and a half weeks which absolutely terrified me but my scans showed that all was ok. you just need to ensure you stay hydrated.

my mw did say that IBS can improve with pg, or get worse. so only time will tell i'm afraid!

good luck hun and welcome

Hi K-Lou

Firstly, congrats on bubs! Such fantastic news!!
I dont have IBS but when I first found out I was pregnant, I had a really bad tummy for 2 or 3 weeks! i was really worried because all the books etc say you will get constipation (which believe you me kicked in eventually!!!) but my doctor said it was quite normal because everything in your abdomen is being moved around to get baby all cosy, so I wouldn't worry too much
As far as you first appointment with the doc, its a little disappointing really! He will work out your dates with you and then tlak you through things like what to eat, and not, general things. Then he will get int ouch with your local ante natal department to register your pregnancy and then you wait... and wait... and wait! You think the 2ww was bad.... nothing compared to this! You will then have your booking in appointment and your 12 weeks scan (hands down the best experience of your whole life so far!!)
Look at me sounding like a pro and only 15 weeks!
Best of luck sweetie xx
And enjoy every single minute of this special time! I spent most of my first 12 weks worried sick because I had no symptoms and really wish I had just enjoyed being a mummy to be!

Girls thank you so much, it really has made me feel loads better than you had the same thing as well. TMI but i am soooo windy, it feels like little popping in my belly where i am holding it in as i am at work LOL I bet it just gas!!!!

I move house on the 2nd Jan and so will have to reg with a new doctor. I love the ones i am with so i am worried I will move and then get a rubbish doctor. Also will tell him at that app as the place who might have to contact me might change once I have moved.

I bet it's a whole new world for you, after so long in TTC!!

I know what you mean about the "wind" situation!! I get it quiet bad to, & have to hold in all day @ work, can sometimes be very embarrasing, when my stomach starts making noises!! I just tell everyone I'm hungry!! lol!!

I've had to booking in app's, one with my MC, & this one! My first was rubbish, in & out in 5 mins, & second was good, he went through all the in's & out's, urine sample, blood pressure, filling forms etc... So it really depends on your doctor!! Your doctor won't do your bloods, that's left to the midwife!!

I also agree, the 2ww is NOTHING compared to the 12ww!! I've got 2w & 3d to go!!

I have IBD which is similar symptoms but illness is a lot worse. Have to take a very strong drug to stay alive in my case (which can affect the babies so bit worried!) I've had an upset stomach for two months now (basically most of my pregnancy so far!) It's not settling either but the babies are looking fine.... i'm just suffering!! I think it's a symptom we've just got to put up with - part of being pregnant I suppose! lol

Good luck xx

congrats on your pg k-lou!
i'm an IBS sufferer too. in my first pg, i hardly had any symptoms, but this time i've had it nearly every day. Also, weirdly, i stopped taking my pregnacare at about 30 weeks cos i ran out and i had a really bad few days IBS, so i went and bought some more and it eased again!
I've found it hard to cope with the tummy cramps as i normally take antispasmodics and immodium but obviously havent been able to, nor put hot water bottle on tummy. like the others have said i've mainly been trying to stick to bland food and avoid triggers. you may be lucky and it eases off for you- good luck!

Hi k-lou, congratulations on your pregnancy!

I have crohn's and IBS. I've found my symptoms have got lots better, infact, they're the best i think they've ever been!

My worry was baby not getting enough nutrients if i had an upset stomach so i had the antinatal multi vitamins on stand by but haven't needed to take them as ive been able to eat really well.

One symptom that's got worse is having wind-i can really sympathise. Try not to hold it in, easier said than done when your in work etc but being bloated and heavily pregnant can get really uncomfortable so let the wind blow freely at any opportunity!

Hope you find things get better for you xx

yay k-lou ur on the pg fourm - woo hoo
I dont have IBS but since being pg have had bad wind been bloated and also get a dodge tummy about twice a week. the dodge tummy can just be the higher hormone levels and all are ok and normal!

Hello and congratulations!!
I'm an IBS sufferer and found pregnancy really made a difference-around 4-6 weeks I had a really dodgy tummy which then settled for a few weeks.

Just as I was starting to relax it hit again about 15 weeks-so bad that I saw consultant within 6 hours of phoning the docs. I was told by the consultant-after it was checked with the pharmacy team that immodium was fine to take if I needed it, also I went on to a daily drink called movicol that stops the swing from constipation to diorreah (sp?). Which I found to be the main problem.

I was from then on ok-apart from when I forgot to use the movicol I didn't put any weight on for the first 20weeks due to this but no one was worried. I hope you manage to get in control of it soon-but it does change throughout. Now Lillith is here I'm better than I have been in years!

Hi, ive had really bad IBS and GORD for years now.
Am currently 12+5 weeks pregnant and my tummy has changed its approache to life.
Im not going to the loo as much, however have had quite a lot of pain, think my stomach isnt used to food being in it for so long!
The acid reflus isnt as bad as I thought it would be, seeing as I have come off my medication.

Also with the IBS, I can now have certain foods that used to upset me now dont at all. I can tolerate dairy for the first time in my life. Very strange - I feel like my body knows what is important for my baby, and had changed accordingly.

Take Care xx
