Was it only the stomach on the wrong side? I'm asking because I had a friend at uni who had her heart, liver, gallbladder and stomach on the wrong side. She was fit as a flee, and had no problems whatsoever.
I'm a nurse working in operating theatre and have seen lots of weird and wonderful things like three kidneys and two wombs. All of these things are only seen on scans and never cause people problems. I'm sure all is well with your bubs, she just wants to be a bit different that's all. x x x

Hello

Yes, it was just the stomach in our case... the sonograper said she had seen a few full reversals as it were, but never this! They were both really lovely but i think they just didn't know what it was and couldn't give us any info which just made us panic... anyway, going to another scan with peadeatric specialist tomorrow so shoudl have more answers then - fingers crossed x x

So we went to Harley Street this week.... the result is that it's not life threatening (but there are some watch-outs to keep an eye on throughout the pregnancy just in case).

She has something called Left Isomerism where the body doesn't distinguish what is left from right when it is developing. Basically what it means its that anything internally that has a left and right (i.e. lungs), would create a mirror image - i.e. she has 2 left lungs instead of a right and left as her body would have created a mirror image.

Sooo..... this leads to potential problems in 3 main areas.
1. Intestines - could be twisted due to the other misplacements.
2. Liver - may not function well due to possible twisted pipes etc going into it
3. The heart is functionally normal with all connections normal but with a risk that the top right chamber is the same as the top left chamber - due to the mirror imaging. This right chamber is your pace maker.
However, she may not be affected by any of these! They just don't know that until she's born.

Its a relief more than anything to know what it is and also to know it is fixable with operations rather than being a condition that nothing can be done about - although we are obviously still rather worried. Hopefully all of this means nothing and she will be just fine - at least there is a chance of that now we know what we are dealing with!!

Thanks for all the support messages etc., it's been much appreciated.

Hi hun! If you press on the ladies other topics, there is a topic titled genetics, it tells you a bit about how her little girl is getting on! Hope your friend and her baby end up ok!

Hey I know this is slightly different but both my mum and sister were born with their wombs/appendix etc on the wrong side. They only discovered my sisters when she had an appendicitis like pain and when they operated couldn't find them as they weren't where they should have been. Modern medicine is so much better now and as long as you are aware of problems you can pretty much get around most things hope all does go well it will just mean your lo is extra special x

Hello!! Its me! Wow. this post is almost 2 yrs old!!!

Ava is doing fabulously!! 2 ops down and shes a complicated little un but shes a lively, bouncy and crazy little 15mnth old

Avas condition is very rare - 1 in 250,000 - Left Isomerism with heterotaxy. Its a heart conditon that leads to other organ misplacment and other complcations but I really wouldn't hazard a guess as to if its the same as your freinds condtion or not. Its really best to wait for the docs diagnosis. Tell her not to google though, worst thing i did! i don't use this site much anymore but you cant contact me on melaniehonore@hotmail.com and we can chat further x
