Baby Book Recommendations

Having just read MrsSetters comments about Gina Ford in a different thread (I had no idea she wasn't a mother and certainly have no time for her now!) I was wondering if any of the 'already mums' could recommend a good book.

I plan on having the baby in our room at least for the first six months and breastfeeding. I'm not into anything fancy and like things as natural as possible.

Thanks ladies.

Hi B

Not a mummy yet but one of my friends who is recommended 'what to expect the first year' and I've bought that from Amazon - quite straight forward and not too preachy (unlike the delightful Ms Ford!!)

Baby Bliss is a fab book. By Dr Harvey Kelp. talks you through the 5 s's to soothe your baby to sleep. swaddling, sucking, swinging , sssshing. He has a theory that babies are born too soon ie that there is a missing 4th trimester and that's why babies are so cross to begin with as they miss the womb. Therefore we should recreate the sounds and sensations of the womb to soothe the baby. Makes a lot of sense. i've really enjoyed reading it and i even practiced some of the techniques of my friend's baby - and it worked! Can't wait till my little girl arrives ( 2 weeks to go ) so i can get started!!!

Re Gina Ford. One of my best friends followed her routine and said it was the best thing ever. she never looked back. Apparently it really works so maybe not dimiss it altogether. i think she has some really valid points. i have the book anyway so will give it a go if i need to.

ive read gina ford too, she is a bit ot but ive picked up a good few ideas from her for when baby arrives, but i must admit a lot of it is a load of rubbish esp the breastfeeding regime. still think it is worth a scan over x

Janey Lee Grace's Naturally Imperfect Baby and Toddler is fabulous!

I also love the Yummy Mummy Handbook by Liz Fraser.

Also, pretty much anything by Vicki Iovine - Surviving the First year of Motherhood is excellent and her toddler book is my lifeline right now.

I asked in Baby and someone suggested - what to expect the first year. I've bought it and although I've only read part of it, I do think it's a good book. I'm not buying anymore books as I tend to use them as a quick guide as the best advice I get is from the ladies on here.

I have the Gina Ford book, not started reading it yet, so I will reserve judgement until I have an actual opinion!

I have read 'Your baby week by week' its a really handy guide that you can either read or dip in and out of as necessary

Hi
I quite like the day by day pregnancy book by Dr Maggie Blott, it has lots of pictures and it goes through pregnancy birth and the first few months. There are a few on here that sound good too, going to get myself on Amazon. xx

I've got 'New Babycare' by Miriam Stoppard, which I am reading at the minute and enjoying it - mainly as it has lots of photos showing you how to do things (bath baby, put on a sleep suit etc) - I find that really helpful and reassuring!

Miriam recommends demand feeding (no routines for newborns) but I'm still not 100% decided which way I'll go - I have Gina Ford's book too and think the idea of a routine sounds appealing, but the routine itself seems a little daunting (I'm somehow meant to express milk and get baby up and dressed in a 15 min slot - argh!) I'll just see how we get on I think!

I'm also planning to get 'What to Expect - The First Year', as it looks really detailed and has lots of Q&A sections, which I love (and I also liked What to Expect When You're Expecting).

Maybe try and get a couple from your local library and see which one you like best?

I have 2 sorts - what to expect in the first year, and miriam stoppard for more the baby manual type book ie what they should be doing at each stage and then also I have a number of books on child rearing - ranging from GIna Ford to the baby whisperer with Rachel waddilove (Gwyneth Paltrows nanny) inbetween - each of them are based around the same principles but range from the very strict (Gina) to the not so strict (baby whisperer). Im someone who naturally likes structure and is more comfortable with it - all my friends with children have followed some degree of structure and swear by it - so I am going to give it a go. I think the important thing is to not follow any too ridgidly but pick the bits that will work for you. I know much has been said about Gina - in particular the fact she doesnt have her own children. To me thats not a big issue as although she doesnt have her own, she has worked in the nanny field for her career and therefore has considerable experience if not herself experiencing the mother role... good luck and happy reading!!
