I was 42 when I had my first baby Jemma who was three in February. I am now 45 years old and would like a second baby however recent hormone tests have shown that I am now perimenopausal. My periods are not as regular as they used to be but I am assuming that a period would indicate that I am still ovulating. Is there anyone out there who is or has been in a similar position but went on to get pregnant? This is last chance saloon and I live in hope!!

Hi Jow. I didn't want to read and run. I am pg with my first child and will be 43 when it arrives. I was pleased to hear of another mum who had her first like me. I am already thinking of how great it would be to go on to have another (seriously). I would derive the same as you. The fact that you are still having periods (albeit less frequently) indicates ovulation. Have you tried clear blue ovulation monitor and sticks? This is how we conceived and I would thoroughly recommend. Leaves nothing to chance. Julie x

I am really sorry to be the bearer of bad news but just becuase you are having periods, doesnt mean you are ovulating still sadly. I am going through the same as you are. I am now 47 but if it is of any consolation, i did fall pg when i was 45 but sadly mc. I havent had any luck since although i was ovulating last year when i was 46 but was under a whole lot of stress at work. Mr periods stopped in Jan this year but returned last month and i am hoping that i have another one on the way soon. My bloods have just indicated that i am perimenopausal too. It is a slim chance to fall pg but its a hope that i am clinging onto. I am now trying to lose weight as having a healthy bmi assists with ovulation. I really want another baby, even at this age. My partner (whose sperm is fine) hasnt got any children and i have an 11 year old son but would love to give oh a child. I remain positive though, it isnt over til the fat lady sings and i am hoping she isnt even warming up yet!!!! Would you like to keep in touch? I'm 42 and ttc my 3rd child. I am in my 12th month of ttc and so far no luck. For the first time last month i decided to chart my temp and it indicated that i didnt actually ov as my temp only rose for one day then fell and stayed low,even though i had a positive on ovpk. My AF is now 10 days late which has never happened to me before, which also confirms i didnt ov this month.I have decided to go to the docs to have a chat and maybe some blood tests to see if i am also perimenopausal too.
Fingers crossed for us all that we will get another chance to get our BFP.

Julie, I have been thinking about using an ovulation kit so will definetely give this a go after next period, always worth a try at least then I will be able to determine whether I am, in fact, still ovulating. Thanks for your comments and good luck with your pregnancy - enjoy!

Summer, I have no proof of this but I kind of feel myself that in the early stages of being perimenopausal hormone levels flucuate wildy. The reason I say this is I went 5 months without a period and experienced bad hot flushes etc but for the last 4 months periods are regular and no hot flushes so I would say don't give up hope.

Well i went to the docs and a fat lot of good that was !!! the stupid woman tried to tell me that i was only 4 days late for my af, I think i am the best judge of how my cycles go, she was insisting that you should go by a 30 day cycle grrrrrrr. She told me to do a pg test again in a week and if its stil neg go bad in a week and we will go from there. oooooo she really anooyed me. Anyway would you believe it my AF turned up this morning lol which i am very pleased about cos i can now say i am on cd1 again. I have decided not to go and visit the docs again and just see what happens. If i get my BFP then its meant to be. If i dont get my BFP by december then its not meant to be. xxxx

Summer41, I think you are right to go with your instincts. Some professionals have no 'bedside manner' at my booking in appointment all my Midwife could do was underline all the negative points about being pg at my age etc!!! Something you can do without when you've had a traumatic route there. Good luck. Julie x

Doesn't it just annoy you when the midwifes and docs etc like to point out all the negatives of being older and pregnant. WE ARE NOT MORONS are we, we have read up and do realise the risks associated with it. We do not need to be reminded all the time. Just because we are older ladies does not mean we are incapable of producing a healthy child.
I'm so happy for you that your pregnancy is moving along nicely. I hope i shall follow in your footsteps in the not to distant future.

Sorry to hear that you have had a negative reaction from your midwife and other health professionals concerning your age. I have to say I must have been extremely lucky as I had no bad experiences with anyone, in fact I wasn't treated any differently to any other women be they younger or older.

I had expected them to offer me all kinds of additional tests and procedures because of 'my age' but just had all the normal tests everyone has. Just hold your head up high and let them get on with it, they don't know everything, we are proof positive that we are still healthy and capable of producing a bouncy baby and of course with our more mature age are bound to be more settled and ready for this wonderful life change.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have added you to my facebook as a friend. Hopefully we can keep in touch on that and share any tips. My af has gone awol again. Day 38 today and i am a bit fed up about that! I just wish i could settle them down again. Mind you, i was so grateful to the last one after a 5 month absence!!!! I am trying to lose weight at the mo, do plenty of exercise and drink 2 litres of water a day. Hoping that will help a bit.

hi jo, good luck to you, i am 43 and although i have 5 children youngest 13 my partner has none, i hope we have not left it too late to ttc, its nice to hear some success stories, i do worry that i may be perimenopausal too.

Hi teddigirl. I am 47 and trying my best as like you, my oh has no children. We thought we had hit the jackpot when i was 45 and i fell pg. Sadly i miscarried but havent quite given up hope although i almost have!

Hi everyone my mil was 41 having her last child and went through her menapause 9 months later, she also had a baby at 39 and her periods were everywhere and she was having symptoms of the menapause then as well. Early menapause runs in her family and she always says how lucky she was dont give up you lot love Leigh xxx
