Head shape/size - being referred to paediatrician

Hi ladies, hope you are all well.

Bit of an odd question, but I was wondering what sort of shape and size your LO's heads are?
Samuel has a definite shape to his head, especially towards the back. When the health visitor first saw him, she measured his head and it came up as 38.2cms - she just said they would keep an eye on it.
I wasn't too worried, as when I was a baby, I also had a bigger than average head circumference, and hubby also had a different shaped head.

Anyway the HV came again last week and measured his head again - this time it was measuring 41cms. She told me not to worry but to book an appointment with the doctor for that day. I did, and the doctor asked questions like if he was feeding ok, was he sleeping a lot, what was his development like etc. He's now referred us to the paediatric team at our hospital. I have to ring them today to make an appointment. Now I'm really worried that something is going to be wrong!!

We've got our 6 week check up today, so the doctor has said he will measure Samuel's head again. I'll keep you all updated on when we get our appointment etc, but please keep your fingers crossed that there's nothing wrong xxx

Fingers crossed hun. Hope its nothing to worry about. Maybe you could ask Dr when he measures today what risks they might be checking for? x

Is it slightly flattened at one side at the back?

If so it's probably plagiocephaly and will usually right itself over time especially when the baby gets a little bit older and can move about and sit up more.

The left side is slightly flattened & this is the side he sleeps the most on. But the main 'problem' is the back of his head almost sticks out - it's hard to describe but as you run your hand over his head,it goes out and then back in at the top of his neck. I've probably not described it that well....!

I'll ask at the appointment today what they would be checking for.

Didnt want to r&r hon, i'm sure everything is fine and they're just being cautious. I would also ask Dr what they would be testing/looking for but try not to worry too much even though thats easier said than done!

Oh hun my fingers are crossed for you. Hope all is ok. Well at least they are keeping a close eye on things but as the others have said ask the doctor today about what they may be checking for. XX

Thanks for your replies ladies. I spoke to the doctor yesterday and asked what it could be, and he was reluctant to say too much, obviously not to get me too worried about what it could be.
But he did say something about 'premature fusion' , which is where the bones in the skull, fuse together earlier than they should do, which would cause the mis shaping of the head. Or it could just be where it's still mis shapen from where he was trying to push his way out.

I'll keep you all updated though xx
