The news today about breastfeeding and weaning.

At the end of the day mummy knows best!

I saw this on Daybreak this morning. It's so confusing. No wonder so many mummies are in a quandry about it all. We try our hardest to do what's right by our little ones and with such conflicting messages it's hard to know what is for the best. Like you said, 'at the end of the day mummy knows best!' x

i know i feel really guilty now just started baby-led weaning (told by my hv i should only do this no puree) and waited until 6months to do it only for this study to come out saying that it could be bad now for my wee man to start weaning so late?! :? totally confused...

the official British Dietetic Association website published last year has their policy statement on weaning and it clearly says exactly this, that exclusive bf for six months is not always best for every baby and that there is some evidence that waiting til six months causes, rather than reduces, the higher rate of allergies we have in Western society. However, it also says in the back page that they don't recommend a change in official policy as it would 'reduce the credibility of health care professionals' etc with parents. Having read that paper when we were advised to wean DD early at 5 months due to reflux I then happily refused to go to any of the 'weaning parties' at my local Gp surgery or to have the Health Visitors (useless) come round and spout the official guidance at me when I knew having asked them that they were not even aware of that paper. I know it's not their fault, but they just trot out such b***cks at times and esp. when you're a 1st time mum you feel like you need to listen to them - if there's a next time, I certainly won't feel like that!
Rant over (sorry girls, don't know where that came from, lol!)

hear hear Vicky.

Go Vicky....Go Vicky!!!

I read that statment too after you sent the links. The whole of the guidance about introducing solids to babies is built really on 'guidance' and not much solid evidence. the main theme was sometime between 17 weeks and no later than 26 weeks. Certainly not earlier than 17 weeks..... each mummy has to respond to their baby I guess and as usual - work it out for themselves!

Gorgeous baby Josh born 14th July 2010 - non responsive silent reflux leading to a bottle/feeding aversion......

When I had my eldest it was 4 months then when I had Alice it was 6 months. With Ioan there was no way he was going to wait until 6 months so started him at 4 months.

I was told not so long ago - could even have been on here - that they decided a while ago they'd made a mistake upping it to 6 months but couldn't go back on their word because they'd look stupid!!! This is also why baby food jars etc still say suitable from 6 months.

These people just have to find a way to make money and give us even more blooming stress!!!!! LOL xxx

Proud Mummy to Eve - 15, Alice - 7 and Ioan - 6 months.
