Weaning....

Hello ladies,

Im just wondered if you have thought about this and if so when do you intend on starting?

We have a weaning course tomorrow so I should be a bit more "clued up" after this, but at the moment I would love to do baby led weaning at 6 months.

My problem is I just dont know how we will make it through the next 3 months without any weaning. Luke is 16lbs at 12 weeks (giant baby) and he is feeding constantly at the moment and I just think he is so hungry. Over the weekend as I was not feeling well, he had quite a lot of expressed milk, and he was taking 9oz each feed!

I know I would have to wait until 6 months to start BLW, but maybe I should introduce some puree at 4 or 5 months? Although Im not sure as I do tend to follow recommendations, and as myself and hubby have allergies I do not want to put Luke at any risk at all.

Anyway ladies what are your thoughts on this?

I will be doing Baby Led Weaning at 6 months - I weaned Max at 6 months but on purees and didn't enjoy it hence going for baby led weanign this time. It is ahrd breastfeeding till 6 months but weaning is not a solution as to start with they take such tiny amounts it doesn't really make much difference.

Life's too short to spend time with people you don't care about!

I don't know what BLW is.
We weaned Matthew at 20/21 weeks, using rice then puree fruit and veg. It worked fine so I expect we'll do the same. I doubt Eleanor will get to 6 months as she's a greedy madam!

BLW is basically where you give baby what you eat (using common sense of course). Once they are about 6 months, show interest in what you are eating and can sit in high chair - you're meant to just plonk some of your food infront of them. I went to a session last week - there was a 7-8 month on knawing on a bit of corn on the cob, chewing a floret of brocoli. It's kind of fun for them rather than eating at first and you still offer milk/breast as normal.
I'm not sure what we're gonna do for Josh, with his feeding aversion I think it;s gonna be a wait and see approach - but if he does start showing an interest in our food I'll go BLW!

Gorgeous baby Josh born 14th July 2010 - non responsive silent reflux leading to a bottle/feeding aversion......

I dont think Lucy is going to reach 6 months regarding weaning..... but i want to stay clear of jars of baby food! thats a definate.

I'd like to mash and puree and blend fruit and veg for her, and make in bulk and freeze.

However after reading up just now on baby led weaning, i think i will partly do that once she hits 6 months...just not rely on it for her to get sufficient amounts.

With my first, she was still gagging on lumpy (jarred) baby food at a year old..... but that was because i was too scared to let her experiment with food.

I dont want to be making the same mistakes with Lucy

Suzie explained it really well, but if any of you want to look it up this website is pretty good at explaining as well: http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/startingsolids/babyledweaning/

The thing with BLW is that you really have to wait until 6 months, and even when you wean most of the babies nutrition still comes from breastmilk/formula. When they are offered food at first they will probably only lick and suck bits and not actually "eat" much, and the food you give is just what you would have. My friend gives her little one home made potatoe wedges, carrot sticks, humous, omelette etc.

With purees they get much more down them, because its mashed and fed to them. I think you can also start earlier because you start with very smooth puree and then progress to more lumpy foods, but Im not sure, as I think the guidelines are still 6 months but very few wait until then.

They say BLW stops babies from being fussy as they are in control of what they eat and how much they eat.

Cody will definately not wait till 6 months. He is already showing signs that he is ready. I asked my health visitor if i could wean at 4 months like my other 2 and she said it was fine if i thought he was ready.

I am trying hungrier baby milk at the moment to see if that fills him up more, otherwise i will be getting out the baby rice in 2 weeks time when he is 17 weeks.

My health visitor also said that now there is research saying that if you leave your baby till six months they will end up needing speech therapy because of not using there mouth muscles to chew. OMG what else are they going to come up with, no wonder parents are confused on what is best for their child.

Momofcody I know what you mean no matter what advice you follow it seems you can't do anything right!

I'm guessing Aila won't last til 6 months she's already very nosy when we're eating I've bought some baby porridge ready to start introducing a bit of texture and now just waiting to see what happens - she's still only 14 weeks so it'll be at least a few weeks.

All me neices and nephews were weaned on purees and vary in their fussiness - my sisters little girl eats anything whereas my brothers kids are quite fussy - to be honest I think its more to do with my neice having to eat what she's given where as my brothers kids were offered plate after plate if they didn't fancy what they were given so they were very much in control.

Archie will be weaned at 4 months he already a gannit! A quick question tho, by 4 months does it mean 16 weeks or 4 actual months from
birth? x

My HV said that you shouldn't force your baby to wait til 6months if they are hungry or looking for food you should start to wean! Struan was 16lb 13oz at 12weeks so I very much doubt that I will be able to hold off until 6 months. I have heard of people feeding rusks and things at 8 weeks which I think is awful but around 4months is fine if your baby needs it.

With Lachlan I started him on baby rice at 15weeks and he started sleeping longer at night so it obviously made an impact and he was needing it. The problem was that it took a long time to progress to lumpier foods and he will still choose food which involves the least chewing at nearly 2 also he doesn't speak, we are starting to get a fwe words but I think this may be down to being a lazy eater! I am going to try and hold off for as long as I can with Struan but he will dictate it, not anyone else!

Great thanks for the help with the weaning ladies. I really must get clued up on it so i have a rough idea of which approach we are going to take. I can't imagine Finley having puree'd food or soft foods at all at the moment. He's growing up far too quickly for my liking! x

We did BLW with our DD (now 3yrs old) and am hoping to do it this time with DS but he is so much bigger than DD so may be hard holding out!

IMO BLW is soooooo easy-we never pureed or mashed anything (except mashed potato of course!). We started at 6months and DD was showing signs of being ready at 5months i.e being very interested in our food, trying to grab it from our hands/plates! We started with par boiled sticks of carrot, broccoli or banana (not par boiled-lol!) etc-anything she could hold herself really. It doesn't seem like anything is going in at first but you soon start to notice that it is from the contents of their nappies (TMI!)

It is supposed to help with their hand/eye coordination and of course their experience of eating is more mature as they see food how it's meant to look-whole carrots etc, not mashed. In terms of choking on lumps BLW is supposed to be better as they are used to lumps from the start and so there's no transition from puree to crushed to whole foods. IMO it's great if you're lazy like me, no pureeing, mashing or freezing. Just feed them what you eat-within reason of course!

If i find that DS is ready for weaning much earlier i'll be gutted and wont have a clue what to do re traditional weaning-may need your help girls. Am going to hang out as long as possible but he is 15lb at 11weeks so not sure how that's gonna go!

I'm a BIG fan of BLW.

HTH?!

My weaning course was rubbish!!! I dont think the lady wanted to be there if Im honest. She said we didnt have to wait until 6 months, just until they can sit up in a highchair! What a load of ****!

I really wish I had not wasted my morning.

I think we will aim to get to 6 months and follow BLW but if we need to address it beforehand then we will.

benji is 4 weeks tomorrow and has 3 meals a day, baby banana breakfast for breakfast, pureed mash and veg for lunch (or a rusk and formula) and a pureed sunday roast and apple puree for dessert. he is a big boy, a gannet and health visitor agreed he needed weaning (plus the old way used to be 3 months and my other children were fine thast way) because ben has reflux i couldn't just keep feeding him milk (he throws it back up) hv suggested going slow and letting benji decide how much he has (which we do anyway) but he is a happy contented little piggy that has 1-2 icecubes of food per feed x (he is also back to normal amount of feeds instead of 3 extra ones x
