baby wipes VS cotton wool & water

What do you all use to clean babies bum with? Do you use warm water with cotton wool balls / pads etc? or do you use baby wipes? For the last 2 weeks ive used the water, but Lucy seems to have got a sore bum - and i dont know if the cotton wool is too scratchy for their bums?

I'm not sure if i should give baby wipes a go, or if they'll make her worse? apparantly the johnson ones are made of 97% water and 3% baby lotion stuff? .... so surely they cant be too bad on such a delicate little bum?

what do you think?

Hiya
We use cotton wool and water (not even warm, I'm so mean!) I use wipes if I'm out and will prob use wipes when Eleanor is a couple of months. I wouldn't have thought the cotton wool could be making her sore?? Maybe check with your HV. Have you tried some sudocream on her bottom?
Hope your doing ok

I use warm water and cotton wool during the day if I'm home but wipes if out and during the night. Sophie was getting a few little red patches so I've just used a little sudocream and it's now fine x

G/C From Born in Oct 09 - Abi had really bad nappy rash when only a few days old due to a reaction to the milk she was on in hospital.

The midwives advised me to try using Boots Olive Oil instead of water as it stops the cottonwool 'dragging' and to use Metanium rather than Sudocrem. I used this combination for months as it kept her bum lovely and clear.

I now mostly use Boots own Fragrance Free wipes on her unless her teething causes a rash and then i switch to the Olive Oil for a few days again.

Just realised I sound like a blimming advert for Boots but their stuff just really seems to agree with Abi's skin.

I mainly use wipes, only water and cotton wool if I'm topping and tailing him as well. the wipes seem fine on his skin, mw and hv never said otherwise. he does have dry skin on face, arms and legs which I've been advised olive oil, but not seem to improve things after 2 weeks, so we'll try johnsons now and switch back if probs. I think each baby is trial and error with lots of things! we're having probs with constipation so experimenting with different formulas.
