hi lizzie still isnt talking!! now having a 6 year old who doesnt stop i shouldnt moan but i was wondering if anyone elses little ones are yet to get to grips with words?
I know some are probably stinging sentances but lizzie only really says mama and dada. she says things that sound like grandad but not clearly and she cant say cat or dog or anything else simple. she says ta. and she says baaaaaa (ina high pitch tone) to call the cat (her name is becks)
should i ask hv for advice?

Isnt it they should have 50 words by 2? So plenty of time yet.

audrey is barely talking either. she talks absolutely loads of gibberish and if you are really listening you can understand a few words (she says hello lily (the dog), wos dat (what's that), where'd go (where did he go), etc.

but these words are few and far between and you can't really encourage her to say something, she just randomly blurts it out

my dad's a gp and says that as she is clearly making sounds (even if they don't make sense!) that he wouldn't worry for a while yet

I wouldn't worry at this stage, she'll get going in her own time . I noticed in our children's centre that there is a course for toddlers who's speech development is 'behind' but it's from age 2.5yrs so a bit older than our LOs are now. Cam has only started picking up words left right and center in the last 3-4 weeks I'd say. Before that be could understand a lot (simple instructions etc) but his vocab was fairly limited. I think something just clicks in their head like walking and then there's not stopping them!!! x

awww i really wouldnt be worried just yet.

My oh thought he heard that 18mth olds should know 1000 words. I havent a clue what he was listening to but it did make me laugh, silly daddy, not sure if he knows 1000 words lol.

I have heard though that sometimes toddlers with older siblings can be a tad slower at talking due to the older one answering for them. I am sure Really soon Lizzie will be chatting away in no time at all. Just think of all the arguments the two girls will be able to have hehe.

Mia wasnt great at talking a while back, but recently has started picking up words like there is no tomorrow. I think it helps that she is going through a copy cat stage at the mo.

Mia still cant say Mum and calls me bum

hehe. I cant wait for the mum and not bum. I hope its nothing to do with mummy's big bum lol.

No is a very over used word in this house already. Not just by me and Daddy though. Mia has taken to saying no before she does anything naughty. Makes it hard to keep a straight face and tell her off lol xxxx

Ha ha I now get "no" with a pointed index finger... so funny!

Emilie babbles a lot but has recently come on a lot with words in both English and Dutch. She specialises cleverly in words that sound the same in both languages (Mouse, Ball, Bear, Fish, Juice etc) so really I have no idea which one she's speaking more of!

we have no actual words yet, loads of chat that makes no sense and lots of sounds but nothing you can recongnise, the 0-5 book says 20 words from about 18 months but were way off that!

James is the same, tons of babbling where you occasionally think you hear a proper word. I just answer him with what I think is appropriate, like yes daddy is in the kitchen, etc! He understands more than he says, and I think that's just as important.

As with anything, they all progress at slightly different rates. xx

Arthur babbled constantly and does say a few words like, more, yes, dad, mamma, there, what's dat! Where's dat? He doesn't always say them in context but like the rest of you said he understands much more than he says! I do what mythical does and just reply with what I think is appropriate!
I'm not concerned about his speech as i know in his own time he'll start talking in sentences and then there will be no stopping him! Xx

Sasha also says next to nothing. Her older sister is also 6, I'd not heard that 2nd children can be slower at starting to talk, thats interesting. She says 'dadda' specifically for daddy, and 'raa raa' for pretty much everything else. She says 'woof' if she sees a dog, and makes a particular sound for Jess (dd1's name) that seems to be just for her, but otherwise that's pretty much it.

She does however make the kind of noise that teenagers tend to make when they can't quite manage to talk, that kind of grunting eh sound. She does understand a lot though, like if I tell her its time to go out, she'll go and get her shoes and bring them to me to put on.

we have the teenage grunt too!, will be reminding him of that when hes a prope teen!

i think hes starting to undestand a lot more he esp knows the word no very well

Pops is a complete chatter box and picks up words really quickly. Her speech/pronounciation (sp) has become a lot clearer now, and she is starting to put words together & form sentences, such as 'daddy have it' or 'happy birthday','bath time'. She's very good at letting us know what she does/doesn't want too!

I think it comes from having a mother who doesn't shut up-she's got to start talking now so she can get a word in edge-ways  I'd be interested to see if littlest one is as good with words as her sister...she's already giving it a good go babbling xx

Flynn is actually saying quite a few words now, so at least he's doing well there, as he's only just started walking!

That I can think of off the top of my head, he says; Mama, Daddy, please, Ellie, Nanna, boobies(!), Opa, gr????n, nana, tidy, poo, bye

No sentences yet though
28/06/2011 at 09:02
We have Mamma, Dadda, Grandma (when prompted), Shoe shoe (never just shoe, and it sounds more like sheeshee), Daaaaa for car (when prompted), Hello (everry time she walks into a room) and the occasional Bye. But that's about it. Don't worry it will come very soon then you won't get a word in edgeways!

Leon babbles away to himself in his own little language. It is sooooo cute! His only real word is 'ta' when you give him something but he also says it when he gives something to you!

Leon has just started walking so I am a very proud mama at the moment & not worried about his talking. He says 'da' which can mean look at that or whats over there?! (at least I think it does!) He also says it when he wants to be silly with daddy & they have 'da' shout offs!

He occasionally makes sounds like mama, dada, baba but not in any conversational context, just practising his sounds in between his normal toddler gibberish!

Hope you feel a bit reassured with all the replies!
