Hi all
I was wondering if you would be kind enough to give me some advice as I am still fairly new to this.

A bit of background...
I got married in June and am scarily desperate for a baby! Hubby however wants to wait until next June before TTCing as he wants a year of enjoying being married first before pregnancy. Fine if I didn't suspect it was going to take ages!

Anyway we have agreed that we will discuss a compromise on our holiday in a month - and before then I really want to try and get a good idea about timings.

The problem is my periods. Basically I have probably only had 5 real (i.e. non pill) periods in my whole life. Last time I came off the pill I didnt have one for 10 months until I went back on the pill again.

So in the last few months I have been going for tests and a scan showed that I have mild PCOS. However they cannot do the bloods until I come off the pill.

So my thinking is, (and I was wondering is this sounds sensible to you,)
* it doesnt really matter when I come off the pill as I can't get preggers without a period anyway
* my bloods will show I am not ovulating
* I will have to have some sort of fertility drug to kick start me

I was also wondering if I do need the drugs will they give it to me straight after the blood results, or will I have to wait ages?

Thanks if you got to the end!!

Hi,

Just popping over from ttc...I have PCOS and was originally diognosed when I was 19 (35 now) It wasn't really an issue until I wanted a baby as being on the pill gave me periods etc...

After trying for 6 months I was referred to a specialist and prescribed metformin. Metformin is actually a diabetic medication so not licenced for the treatment of PCOS specifically but is prescribed to alot of sufferers as it can help to ease the symptoms and kick start cycles. I was lucky and concieved the 1st cycle of trying after taking metformin and now have a gorgeous boy who is 1, we are now ttc no 2 and back on metformin.

To answer your questions...

It is unlikely you will get pregnant without a period but not impossible especially if your symptoms are mild.

You may be ovulating, 21 day bloods will confirm that

It may be that a simple change in diet and lifestyle will do the trick so you won't necessarily need any drugs.

HTH

Good Luck xx

Hi Sazzle
Thanks for your response and good luck with your ttcing!. To be honest I'm not that sure what I could do in the way of lifestyle changes - my bmi is 23 and I don't drink or smoke. Is there anything you would suggest?

cornish girl, hi im going for my 21 day bloods this month i am also bmi 23 and no drinking or smoking and im 21. i would say just come off the pill and see how it goes? then getur bloods, so they can sort something out asap, coz for all u no u could be oving, in which case just go back on the pill if hubs isnt happy with ttc now, or if u r not oving it may take a while to get pg, so a kcik start is a great idea, i think have a chat with ur hubs and doc, see what they say? xxxx and good luck x

Hi,
I have just read your post and thought I would mention my sister's experience. She had 2 periods in 2 years and had other symptoms that related to PCOS. She split up with her partner and dad to her little girl who was then 3 yrs old.
She had put on a lot of weight and decided to go to the doctors as she wanted a definate diagnosis. As she new that PCOS can cause weight gain especially around the waist.
She had the blood test on the Monday and had been told to go back the following week for the results. However , on the Thursday she received a call from the doctor's surgery. The woman's words were 'Congratulations, you ARE pregnant!'
She was in total shock and dropped the phone.
She hadnt had a period for at least 6 months and had only been seeing her new partner for a month.
It turned out that the last night she spent with her ex in their flat, they did the business for old time sake lol. She was nearly 4 months pregnant when she found out.
So I would definately say you've still got a good chance.

Hey
If i were you, I would come of your pill so things can settle down, and compromise by using other protection for the time being until you both feel ready.
I finished my pill over a year ago, and expected to get caught in the first few months - my periods have been all over the place and I am currently having 21 day bloods etc.
If I had stopped taking my pill sooner (which we discussed but I was too scared to give it up) then when we actually started TTC, I would have known my cycles are all over the place, and could have been one step closer to sorting it out.
Hindsight however, is a really wonderful thing.

I dont know what happens and when they give you drugs though, as I am not there yet!

Good luck with your discussion
