My twins were born at 32 weeks,i was told that they might be behind other children the same age ie they might sit up later than other babies of the same age. However everything development wise has been fine infact they were walking at 11months of age. However they are three in june and there speech is not as good they count using there fingers and point to things they want though i do encourage them to talk to me,i think im doing all of the right things with them i read to them, chat to them, point to things and name them i also sing though not very well everything i do seems to be of no avail.I have mentioned this to my hv and was told an appointment would be made for the twins however 6 months down the line im still waiting. Does anybody have any tips on how i can help the boys to talk??

thank you

you really need to chase things up with the speech therepists... you haev long waiting lists but you can very easily slip throught the net! unfortionatly those who shout the loudest get down quickest! ask if there are any cancellation appointments too... another thing you you need to do is make sure you ask open questions not closed questions... eg. do you want toast or cereal?? do you want your doll or the bear to play with? don't say do you wnat toast? because they can just nod their head... giving options pushes them into speaking.. this is definatly something the speech therepist will be doing with you, looks like you're doing everything else though! :\)
good luck! x

Hi, I have a 22 month old daughter, and she is not really speaking either. She tries but it sounds really mumbled and doesnt make much sense. I was also worried and spoke to my health visitor who was very good. She did say that they all develop at different rates and one day she might not say anything than out of the blue she might just come out and say a few words. To be on the safe side though she is sending my daughter for hearing tests, as this can slow down the talking. My mum always tells me not to worry as I wasnt talking at 3 and had to have speechtherapy but she said it was where I was spoilt and only needed to point at things to get what I wanted!

Hi there, I cannot speak from first hand experience as I am a first time mother of a 5 week old, however my friend has twins who were also very late in talking and she was told by her hv that twins talk a lot later than other children as they communicate with each other in their own way with their own language and do not feel the need to talk until they they really have to.

My little boy was 2 end of Nov and has only just started to make sounds recognisable to words! Unfortunately his sisters seem to get there first for him so it's frustraiting!! I have always been told the time to worry is around their 3rd birthday as they should be making headway by then. Saying that, I know plenty of mum's at the school where my girls go whose boy's were nearly 3 and a half before they started talking - not always, but boy's do tend to be a bit lazier than girls. Wish u all the best thou!!
