when i last saw the midwife she said that most women that have a homebirth dont have the injection to release the placenta but deliver it naturally. both my ds were born in hospital and i had the injection both times. did anyones elses midwife talk to them about this and also have you got any experiences of an active third stage?

I had an active 3rd stage with no injection and "had" the placenta in the birth pool. It only took a few minutes after the cord had stopped pulsing and was cut. No problem.

My mw suggested the injection when we first met a few weeks ago and booked them for our homebirth. But Im undecided - I think I might rather do it naturally after having a natural birth. Though I'd like to wait until the time to decide (this is my first) as I have no idea how long everything will go on and how i will be feeling at the end of it.
She did say that I should get out of the pool though - though michelle had hers in the pool. My mw had suggested a good way is to have it on the toilet - they put a bin bag under the seat to "catch" it - as it's a comfortable position to be in. Another friend who had a home birth said she felt good having it by sitting on a bucket!

So many options!! And I only just realised this week how big it is!

I had a homebirth with my little boy and had wanted to have an active 3rd stage but when it came round to it, I was so exhausted that I wanted the injection, just to get it all out of the way, if that makes sense!!! xx

What do you mean by "can't touch you" and what do you mean by an "active" 3rd stage?

when i was pregnant with ds1 i was told at the antenatal classes that if they dont give you the injection to release the placenta they cant touch you as it can make you bleed heavily. by active 3rd stage i mean with out the injection x

Right just checking i can be a bit dim!

i don't know what they ment by they can't touch you? I was sat in the pool holding my new lo Talking to my DH, mom and other kids while waiting then after the cord was cut my DH wrapped the baby up to keep him warm and sat with him and the others on the settee and the midwife held the cord and told my when i was ready to push and she GENTLY pulled and it came straight out with one push and no pain!

I went for natural, seemed silly to do the baby bit naturally then have injections after. Mine fell out too! One leg over the edge of the pool and out it came, midwife was a good catch tho (hee hee). I didn't have my son injected with Vit k either, didn't want him hurt so soon after birth. Like everything else, it's a personal choice.
