Autism HELP.... - Children with special needs

Hi - I'm hoping someone will be able to help me, my lo is 14 months old, I took him to the hv on Monday and she said that he is showing early signs of Autism.... I took him to the doctor this morning and he agreed, so lo has been referred to the local hospital for an assessment...

What do they do at the assessment???

I'm absolutely gutted, my beautiful little boy...

Hi sara, didnt want to read and run, I dont really know much about autism but i wanted you to know i am thinking of you,

What made the hv think he has autism, I didnt think they could diagnose this early i always thought it was something that they picked up at nursery or school.

Remeber though, whatever the drs say, Saul will always be your beautiful little boy and you will get through any hard times together. Sending you big hugs xx

Saul doesn't play like other babies, he just throws his toys on the floor, he doesn't feed himself or hold his bottle... He flaps his arms a lot and his actions are very repetitive... He throws himself backwards when in his high chair and bangs his head...

Totally gutted...

Hi sara7 if you wanna chat about things i am able to chat with you hunn,i am on the due in jan09 forum.
I adopted a little boy 6 yrs ago with a condition called fas,he shows some signs of autism as there is a wide spectrum of symptoms with his disability,but please please remember no matter what your little boy is still the same little boy you have always had and always will sweetheart.
I understand that you are obviously completely gutted but yours or his life wont end,there will be challenges along the way,but believe me it makes you a stronger more tight nit family if anything.
Stay strong and if you want to chat you know where i am ok.

Aww sweetie, I really feel for you, I wish there was something I could say or do to help. On the plus side at least they are looking into it now, and maybe some specialist help and play therapy may help. I really hope the appointment goes ok. Sometimes life just seems so crap and unfair, you will get through the tough times though and like claire says you will come out of it a stronger and more tight knit family. Brilliant news... Saul had his assessment at the local child development centre...

They have assured me that at present he is not showing the usual signs of Autism so they don't want to see him again until October but things are looking up...

I'm so very happy...

thats good news. my brother has autism..hes almost 18 now but it was clear that something wasnt quite right from when he was around 2. there are varying levels of autism and sometimes it can be very mild, try not to worry.

i have a 5 year old with autism and when he was diagnosed he was referred to consultant at local hospital where he has 4 monthly appointment where they basically observe him and ask me about how he getting on and have short talk to him, we were also referred to a psychologist to confirm his diagnosis too, any questions please feel free to ask.
