Hi there,

I just wanted to post this wonderful link about Tongue Tie and its effect on Breastfeeding.

http://www.tonguetie.net

If you are having problems with breastfeeding it is worth asking for someone just to check if there is any sign of tongue tie in your baby.

My son has Tongue Tie and feeding for him has always been an issue, even now he is 2 years old and on solids, he still gags and finds it difficult to eat.

We have struggled with this problem for 2 years from huge issues with breastfeeding to inability to take a dummy to eating solids. He is now finally going to have surgery to correct the problem. Only now it will have to be done as more complex operation under general aesthetic.

This problem is often not detected and if it is there is currently a wait and see policy with in the NHS. They wait and see if the child has speech problems before operating as long as the child is thriving. If this is caught early it is a simple snip done with out the need for general aesthetic.

I hope it helps someone before they have to go through what we have.

I just want to add that we had M's tongue tie spotted within 24 hours of her birth and it was snipped when she was 5 days old down at our local midwife care centre. So a positive NHS experience. x

Here, here!
My DS had a sub mucosal (posterior) tongue tie that went undiagnosed as they're very difficult to spot. It basically ended BF for us as he never gained weight and was starving for 5weeks as he couldn't feed properly. We sought advice from a private lactation consultant at 5weeks who diagnosed and snipped the tie but it was too late by then. DS is now FF but isn't a brilliant bottle feeder either!! At least having it corrected should mean less problems in the future though (i sympathise with you groomy).
Groomy is right-any problems with BF please get it checked out as a lot of people have them corrected with great success

In my experience no midwives/doctors knew enough about it. Having my DD tt snipped privately at 4 weeks was the only way i could continue to bf successfully as the NHS route was too long a wait and a fight to get the help!

I would see a lactation consultant if you need help, this is what i did who confirmed my DD had 100% tt and did the procedure in my home. It annoys me how when my DD was born the hospital said she had a slight tt that would not affect feeding, grrrrrrr!

So pleased to have found this!

My lo was unable to latch and suck, took till 54 hours old when I spotted what I thought was tongue tie, midwife agreed and has referred us to a consultant in Newcastle, as it's affecting babys feeding it will be sorted quickly!

Luckily we are currently managing to feed with shields, am hoping fixing the tongue tie will mean we can get rid of them!

Took an extra day after diagnosis to finally get a latch which was a very traumatic day for various reasons. But we're there now!

We shall see how quickly we can get seen for an appointment.
