prefers one boob over the other?

these past couple of days DD has seemed to prefer one boob over the other making for a rather tearful feeding time (her, not me!). Not the same boob each day, mind!!

The first couple of feeds each day are fine, she feeds happily. It gets more obvious through the day, with the last couple of feeds being the worst. I have been making an effort to wind her once she starts getting upset incase it was that, but has made little difference as once she has burped or coughed up, i'll put her back on the same breast only for her to start crying again. Sometimes she'll take the nipple, then cry after a few seconds. If its been a reasonable amount of time, i'll just leave it and assume she doesn't want anymore, but if hardly any time has passed, i switch to the other boob where she will happily feed!

I know that your milk supply doesn't just stop, but could it be that she has just drained the boob (very very quickly??!) and wants more milk? I could understand this but sometimes shes only on for a couple of mins and wants to swap, so its not exactly getting low supply! I always make sure i start with the opposite boob each time i do a feed, so its not like i'm giving her an empty one to start with..

DD is 9 1/2 weeks and i express once every morning

Anyone else had experience of this?

I had this with my DS2 when he was really tiny, but he just wouldnt feed at all on one side. I ended up expressing that side until he got used to it but i found that i had very little milk that side. When he was bigger the only time he could feed on that side was first thing in the morning, i would put him on that side which he would empty and usually have some from the other side but it would be enough in the morning. If i put him on that side again through the day he would be on and off in 2 mins and want the other side. I knew by expressing that there was not much milk coming out. It is as if that side has less squirts. When i express the good side there is about 8 squirts at once but the crap side there was about 3. She might be draining the good stuff and not wanting to work but getting less milk out hence wanting the other side.

You could feed her till she does that and give her to someone else to finish her feed in a bottle and express that side and that way you will see whats left and maybe figure it out from there???

Good luck

my son started being fussy and only wanting to feed from one side so i started feeding in the rugby ball position on the bad side where you tuck the baby under my arm that way he was lying on the same side of his body to feed from both sides.

THanks gemm and babypie - I will follow both suggestions and see what I come up with. She hasn't been as bad past couple of days and when she did it today I just had to wind her more than usual and carry her around and she was fine - think it was just needing to do a huge burp!! She was sick lots too...

Thank you xxx

I have had to always offer the least favourite boob first and then let her take a full feed from her favourite side (i call it the vanilla booby). This was after my bf consultant tried everything to help me get my lo to feed for longer from the other side. Sometimes she will stay on and happy for a good serving but its rare. I keep offering it to maintain a milk supply in it.
