I am breastfeeding my 3rd baby and my boys both stopped feeding themselves at 8 months then 11 months. After every problem imaginable with them including frequent mastitis, thrush, cuts, sores and bleeding nipples I have only had one bout of mastitis with my daughter so am really enjoying feeding her. She is 10 months old now and still feeds 6 or 7 times a day from me which is the only fluids she gets (apart from milk on cereal and in meals) as she just plays with a beaker and cup then throws them on the floor, and has never had a teat which I obviously won't be introducing now. I have no problem with these feeds as I am still off work and she only feeds for 10 mins at a time. I know I still have plenty of milk as I can hear her swallowing and have also expressed each morning since she was born and still do one side and easily get 2oz every day before she feeds from it. I would just like to know how often other babies of this age and older feed as I will carry on as long as she wants to. My only problem is that she has always fed under arm in the rugby position from both sides as for some reason she wasn't taking milk whilst in any other position so didn't regain her birth weight until she was nearly 5 weeks old and has stayed feeding that way. However, she is obviously getting very long now and it's getting more difficult to feed her in that position. How do you feed older/bigger babies?
Thanks x

hi. with my 2nd baby he was 2 years when i finishe feeding him. i just had him in a semi sat up position and fed him that way, he was too big to lay down in my arms. it was hard but i stopped him at 2 because my boobs were starting to hurt. it was just for comfort at that age anyway. hope this helps.xxxx

Hi. My lo is 14 months and he feeds 1st thing and last thing from me and has water to drink during the day. He did used to feed from me 4 times a day when he was 10 months and then about 3 times a day when he was 11 months and then when he was a year I cut him back to twice a day mainly cos I was going back to work and didn't want to express during the day at work but also cos I felt he was getting enough milk in other things like cereal, yoghurt, cheese etc.
He usuall feeds sitting next to me and he just turns his head towards me and on a morning he'll lie down in bed next to me.
I don't when I'm gonna stop. I've always been told by various people (hv mw etc) that he'll wean himself off but I can't see it cos he's a right greedy thing! lol
Sounds like you're doing great. xx

isaac is 9 months and still b/f he does prefer the left side and really mucks about on the right side so i save that side for the bed time feed when hes too tired to argue lol, i fed my daughter till she was 21 months but was only feeding first and last thing after 1 year, i really didnt want to feed her past the age of 2 so i was pleased when she gave up herself. Dont know how long i will carry on feeding isaac think i will see how it goes.

i will definitely try to feed till at least one if he tries to stop before then but dont see it he loves his milk and would not eat solids if he could get away with it
must be hard when out and about
i am lucky my wee one will be flexible if he wants milk he has to sit as the situation permits but he and i do prefer to be lying down gives an excuse to stretch out on sofa or nip upstairs for a nap
Your say
