hello!
my son will be 5 months tomorrow and he rolls onto his tummy to sleep. as soon as i put him in his cot off he goes. he sleeps much much better this way, clearly prefers it, but it scares me. he sleeps in our room, is breastfed, loves playing on his tummy during the day and is quite big and strong for his age. is it ok to let him? dont really know if i can stop him anyways.

Generally the older baby is the less of a problem it is. It all comes down to the strength of your own LO, can they lift their head, can they roll themselves over, can they kick covers away from face, etc...DD1 rolled onto her side to sleep from day dot (had MW exclaiming she hadn't put her down that way, ) whilst DD2 has always slept on her back & has yet to master rolling over.

my little boy is 10 months now,
and he was sleeping on his belly as soon as i put him in his cot like you i was worried but he was fine and slept much better,
found it better too when he had a cold as he rarely had a blocked nose because always slept on his belly,
he still does it now but not as much
hope this helps you,
try not to worry too much he will tell you if hes not happy,

Hi, my daughter is 10 months old and since putting her in her cot at about 5 months has always slept on her front. She would roll over and fall to sleep then I would turn her over as I was worried too but within 5 mins she was always back on her front so I just let her. She still sleeps like this now and it has never been a problem. Hope this helps with the worries xx

thanx!! hes very good on his tummy during playtime and can roll back to front and front to back. i put him in on his back but it doesnt take long and off he goes roly poly. guess im just going to have to accept his preference... his father is a devoted tummy sleeper too!

I dont think you have much choice if your little one is choosing to roll over hun. We have got a sensor pad and alarm which puts my mind at rest at night. I would highly recomend getting one because it will alert you if it doesnt detect any movement after 20 seconds xx

Once my little boy started being able to roll over he decided to sleep on his stomach, i was quite worried at first and i kept trying to turn him over but he would always go back to that same position. I was more worried because of his birth weight as he was small and struggled to put weight on hes now nearly 8 months.x

can they roll over in sleeping bags/dreampods? My boy is only 4 months and isnt rolling yet but it looks like it would be hard to roll in one of them so might be worth a try if worried.

he sleeps in a sleeping bag and can roll in that. hes been sleeping on his tummy now for a week or so at night and i gotta say hes sleeping much better. went 8 straight hours for a few nights in a row (till teeth started botherin him again). im still checking on him lots and still sleep with one hand on his back (his cot is right next to my side of the bed and weve removed the removable bars on that side so i can easily reach him).

The advice I was given by the HV is put them on their backs to sleep until they can roll both ways by themselves and then you can let them choose their own position. My dd is now 20 months and sleeps on her forearms and knees curled up in a little ball. It looks really uncomfortable but she sleeps really well like it.

thanx ladies! ive now brought this up in my baby group and to doctor and theyve all said if he rolls himself that way i should just leave him. i know the older he gets the lower the risk and his now nearly 5 and a half months anyways so im trying not to worry. the cot is safe too, nothing in it that he could get into and i do trust that he would cry if there were.
