Also posted in bottle feeding - I'm g/c from pregnancy but would love your advice.

If I need to bottle feed, then I'm thinking of using Aptamil. From reading posts on here it seems that you can put boiled water into sterile bottles, leave them on the side and just add the powder when LO is ready for a feed.

However I did read that aptamil doesn't disolve in cooled water and wonder if anyone has any experience of making bottles with Aptamil, in this way. Would appreciate any advice, thanks xx

It dissolves fine in my experience. All formulas can be a bit of a pain on the dissolving front and I never had a prolem when I put aptamil in cool water.

I use SMA but mix half and half. Fill all days bottles with half needed water then at feed time add other half (hot) from flask, then add powder. Shake and serve. Dissolves better in warm/hot water. Works for us, trialed and errored lots of ways but this way suits us best. x

Hi I use aptimal for my 4 month old, Lily. I sterlise the bottles then put cooled boiled water in and leave them on the side. When I need to make a bottle I heat the water (I put it in the microwave for 20 seconds..naughty mummy but I've done this with all 3 of my children and never had a problem) before adding the powder.

You are supposed to add the powder 30 mins after the water has boiled (at about 70 degrees) as this is what kills the bacteria in the powder (as its not sterlie)....... Its a bit of a pain but that is the "correct" way fo doing it! So its not really about the disolving, its more about the safety.... sorry if i sound like a know all.... its just that my dd has no spleen so i've had to look inot this in great detail and be very careful!! x x

I will back up mel7 on this one! I made my first powdered formula bottle today (mixed feeding so have been using the cartons) and that is exactly what it says to do on the box

That's great, thanks for all your replies xx

you may need to give it a bit more of a shake - but it's always been fine for us!

I can see why people make it the 'correct' way, especially in Mel7's case - but also I think you should go with what will work best for you as it has been every way possible over the years and most people have turned out fine! My reasoning for adding to cooled water on the side was 1) it would be easier not reheating the bottles when I was out and 2) in the early days when there was no routine and I wasn't sure when my lo would need food, I would not leave my baby screaming for food whilst I boiled a kettle, added the water, waited for it to cool down and then mixed the powder!

I am not saying any way is correct though

I can certainly see now why it's so confusing!

It's a great link that mel7 has provided, with so much useful information, there's no doubting the correct way to do it.

Honestly though it seems such a long, drawn out process. I know my baby hasn't arrived yet but I'm sure it can't wait for me to boil the kettle, leave it for 1/2 hour, then cool it under the tap.

I really am hoping to breastfeed and my god, I hope I can because I just can't get my head around bottle feeding at all.

Thanks for all the advice though, it really is appreciated xx

Totally agree, the majority of people I know, all make it different ways and I've never heard of any problems from it. Its a shame its not easier to make up really isn't it!! We are spending a fortune in ready made cartons for the moments when she is hungry unexpectidly!!!

I'm a naughty mummy, but have done it this way with both of mine and they're a healthy and robust as can be. I sterilise and make up all my bottles in the evening, ready for the next day. They go in the fridge when they're cool and I reheat them as and when I need them the next day. When I had DS nearly 9 years ago, this was the accepted way of doing things - he was fine,so I didn't see any need to change when DD arrived. Although it's not an issue now, as I know exactly how many bottles DD has each day, it is important to throw away any made up bottles that don't get used within 24 hours.

I use aptamil. I boil the kettle and leave it for 30mins min, but prefer to leave it for an hour before pouring into sterile bottles then adding the formula. It does need abit of shake. I always shake the bottles well before I heat them up before feeding also. x

i fill my bottles in the morning with boiled water - then leave them on the side and add powder when i need the feed - i don't have any problems with the powder disolving

I have worked with children in a nursery for yrs and we used to have to ask parents to a either bring in bottles made up or bring in water n measuerd powder as not allowed to make bottles up!!
Now with my own i make 4 in mornin and 4 in evening, i make when water cooled after 30 mins then i put them in fridge when cooled and this works for us.... Mw and hv seen me do this and didnt see problem with it!! xx

I use just boiled water, never leave it to cool, think it only says to leave it 30 mins so you don't scald yourself but I just be careful not to! This was it doesn't take long as I cool it in a bowl with ice if I need quickly.

with both my girls i have left the bottles on the side then added the powder as and when we needed them, they would never drink warm milk so had it room temp and it has always mixed fine for us
