I'd firstly advise packing the damn thing well in advance! I went into labour at 37+4, and hadn't packed a bag thinking I had oodles of time. So at 3 in the morning I'm asking hubbie to go up into the loft and find my suitcase! Whoops.

To pack:
Lots of Maternity pads - at least 2-3 packets.
Proper knickers - can't bear those disposible nasties, so I got some cheapie knickers from Asda - pk of 3 for ??1, I bought loads and just threw them away with each pad change.
Day and night clothes for you.
Toiletries including ear plugs - especially if you intend to sleep and you're in a bay with other mums and babies.
Moist toilet tissue or baby wipes for those after birth wees and poos - ouch!
Nappies, sleepsuits, and hat for baby.
Camera.
Change for car park and phone. Phone numbers of people you want to phone.
Magazines, books, things to do.
Snacks and drinks - especially for partner as labour can be long and boring for them!
Flip flops - I found slippers to hot.

Not bother packing:
Formula - most hospitals have the main brands in stock - but check with your hospital - I packed some ready made cartons and didn't need them.

I think biker chick has it covered! But i would def agree loads of maternity pads i took one pack of 12!!!!!! that was enough for one day. and defo cheap pants massive ones.aving emergency c section so disposable pants wouldnt even fit i still looked a spregnant after! Ha ha my mil bought me couple of packs of tummy warmers size 18 and im still wearing them !! i was goin to throw them away but scar wastender for couple of months after so had to keep wearing them, now i quite like the fact they hide my tumy which hangs over my pre pregnancy pants. The food is proper shit in hospital i had afailed induction so was infor 5 days in total and its realy hard toet properly. Also i originally took 3 sleepsuits and 3 vests this obviously wasnt enough in my case and sent oh to bring me some more in, he brought 0 to3 months ones in instead od newborn so put extra clothes where oh can find them just in case. Good luck xx

i'd also recomend packing
- lip balm (useful when using gas & air)
- Hair bands or clips (to gets those wispy bits of hair of your face)
- hand cream/body moisturiser (warm wards really dried out my skin)
- mp3 player
- Bit of make up & remover
- Muslins
- Feeding Bra (if planning to BF)
- Clean flannel (fantastic for putting cold & wet on your face!)
- Different flannel (for a VERY! gentle wash in the shower after birth)
- Snuggly Big cardi or similar for comfort
- Big bottle of lucozade
- Bottle of cordial if you dont like luke warm tap water!
- Usual Shower bits & bobs
- Scratch mitts
- Hard boiled Sweets
- Large Cotton Wool pleats (i had minor grazes and found it nicer to hold a cold wet pleat against me as i pee'd!)
- special going home outfit for bubba

Check with Hospital whether you need to pack
- Towels (i didnt)
- Cotton wool balls for washing baby (i should have)

I also found it easier to have a fresh outfit (socks, yoga pants&t-shirts) and a clean set of pj's somewhere hubby new where and get him to bring it in daily and send him home with as much as you can each time he goes home. I'd also recomend telling hubbys where spare baby stuff is if needed.
