How did you encourage your lo to roll over etc?

Hi,
My lo is nearly 4 months but was 5 weeks prem.
She loves to look at people and 'chats' away happily in her swinging chair but she hates being on the floor. I try to give her tummy time as recommended by the HV (and my Mum and everyone else who has an opinion!!) but she only lasts about 5 seconds then she cries.
She can hold her head up to see for a while so it's not that, but I don't know what to do to help her.
I don't really mind leaving her in the chair but I'm worried that she'll never learn to crawl!!
Am I over-reacting?
:?

I'd try not to worry too much. One thing I've learned is that all babies are different and they all do things when they're ready to. I'd just keep placing your lo on her tummy every so often to get her used to it, but don't leave her to cry or she'll develop a negative reaction to it. Good Luck XXX

My lo is just about rolling over, just needs that extra nudge. She is 4.5 months now. Try smiling at her and appeasing her when she's on tummy so she relates it positively. Or place toys in her vision or within reach when lo is on tummy. Get her used to as much as you can..but don't leave her if she cries as I agree, she may develop a negative reaction to it.

I was worried about this too, Ray was the same at 4-5 months, he is now 6 months and over the past 2 weeks he has started rolling over on his own and won't stop. Now I can't take my eyes off him for a second he rolls so quick. Make the most of it whilst they are still, that's what I say! I think they just do it when they are ready so don't worry too much.

Honestly, don't fret about it. Crawling isn't a developmental milestone and babies that don't crawl will often walk at the same time as crawling babies.
As the other ladies have said just pop her down and give her lots of smiles and encouragement.

Thanks so much for all your comments!
It's just such a minefield this parenting malarky!
Glad there's lots of helpful, real advice avaiable!

HIya my lo is 9 month and didn't start to do much till last month - he hated being on his belly and he hated lying on his back unless it was on the changing mat minus his nappy! he quite happily sat in his swing! i started puttting him down when he got to big for it and then thats when he started all his action lol!

hi my lo was 5 weeks prem too and he didn't start rolling over till about 5 1/2 months he didn't sit up till he was 8 1/2 months and didn't crawl till nearly 10 months and he's nearly 1 and still pulls himself around on his belly. don't worry and try not to compare to other babies you have to just keep saying he was 5 weeks early.
one thing we did do when he layed on the floor we use to shout sausage roll at him and then roll him on the ground he loved it.

Hi my daughter was 5 1/2 weeks prem too and is now 5 1/2 months and hasn't rolled yet although she is trying. She gets on her side and is nearly over. My husband helped her over yesterday and she got there but she isn't doing it herself yet. She will when she is ready. Although she was beside me in the bed the other morning and I had her on her side and when I woke she was on her belly so she must have managed it then. So crafty she does it when I am asleep. I let her sleep on her tummy in the morning time as she finds it comfortable and sleeps well. She can move her head from side to side no problem so I know that she is fine. If she is uncomfortable she surely lets us know by crying.

Don't worry your lo will do these things. I think the same as you when Kara is not doing the same things as others at the same age but we have to remember that they are prem and development time can take a little bit longer at this age.

My daughter was 8 weeks early and is 5 months old now. She used to cry as soon as I put her on her tummy, but this is getting much better, she lasts about 5-10 minutes now. Have you tried putting a a little pillow under her chest when you give her tummy time? I found it helped Morgana a lot to be slightly propped up. She started twisting to one side when she lies on her back, so I assume she is getting ready to roll over in the next month or so. Remember, you can't measure your lo against other, non premature babies of her age or you will get frustrated.

I try not to compare her too much - she's a fair bit smaller than others of her age anyway so it's not too hard to remember that she's not going to be at the same stage!
I do find it hard though - I remember waiting for her first smile because it took soooo long!!
Thanks for the tip about the pillow and also just doing it with her. I loved that idea about shouting sausage roll - that's definately something my dh will love to do!

My LO was two weeks late and she is now 7 months and still not rolled from back to front yet. She only manages to get on her side so far- So don't worry. Like somebody else said- they all do it at different ages when they are good and ready. I had the same prob as u where she wasn't keen on tummy time and like mskene said- my LO still loves her bouncy chair and will sit happily in it for ages so i suppose when she gets too big she will be rolling around on the floor! I have tried using pillows under her too to prop her up slightly and she lasts longer and also rolls onto her back easier

Poppy is nearly 6 months old, she too was 2 weeks late and for the last 2 weeks has been rolling around all over the place. Prior to this although she had great head control she hated being on her tummy. One day I just laid her on the bed, turned round to pick up her bottle and she was on her front! She then rolled back onto her back! I was shocked.
All babies develop at different speeds, some will talk before others and some will walk earlier - it's just fun watching them develop into little people before your eyes!
